is mastrubation is harmful - #35869

Levi

I am struggling to make sense of something that's been on my mind lately. Got into a convo with friends about masturbation and now I can’t shake it off—like, is masturbation is harmful or is it just another normal thing we all do? I've always thought it wasn't that big of a deal, but then I read some articles that say it could have negative effects. A few months ago, I started to notice I felt kinda guilty after, like, is that normal? Sometimes I even feel a bit tired or mentally foggy afterward. Also worried about whether it’s affecting my relationship. My partner mentioned feeling distant lately, and I wonder if I’m relying too much on self-pleasure instead of connecting with them. I mean, how much is too much? When does it become, like, problematic? I’m really trying to find balanced info here because I don’t wanna jump to conclusions. Could there be some real health risks? Is masturbation is harmful in any specific way that I should be concerned about? Gosh, just a bit lost trying to unpack this!

Doctors' responses

From an Ayurvedic perspective, masturbation is generally not considered harmful when practiced in moderation. Ayurveda emphasizes balance and moderation in all aspects of life, including sexual activity. Your feelings of guilt or fatigue could arise from overindulgence or an imbalance in your doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—each of which governs different aspects of your bodily functions.

Excessive masturbation might lead to Vata or Pitta imbalances. Vata imbalances, often in very active minds, can manifest as anxiety, restlessness, tiredness or mental fog—similar to what you describe. Pitta—a dosha linked with heat, metabolism, digestion—if aggravated, can lead to irritability, impatience or inflammatory issues.

If you suspect these imbalances, consider following a routine to bring more grounding and balance to your life. Start your day with a calming daily routine or Dinacharya: wake up early, do some light yoga, and meditate to stabilize Vata. Include grounding and nourishing foods in your diet, such as cooked root vegetables, warm soups, and grains like rice and oats. Make sure you stay hydrated, but prefer warm water over cold.

When it comes to relationships, open communication is vital. Discuss your concerns with your partner, and work together on strengthening your emotional and physical connection. Ayurveda highlights the importance of harmonizing relationships and ensuring that physical intimacy aligns with mutual respect and desire.

Remember that moderation is key. If masturbation begins to interfere with daily life, impacting energy levels, focus, or relationships, it’s worth reflecting on the frequency and developing healthier habits. Reconnect with other activities that bring joy and fulfillment, like creative hobbies or engaging with nature. Herrad Ayurveda’s approach rests on sustainability—ensuring physical and mental harmony—by aligning with your natural well-being.

Masturbation, in essence, isn’t inherently harmful from an Ayurvedic perspective. It’s a normal human behavior, but like most things, balance is key. Ayurveda emphasizes moderation and understanding one’s own prakriti (body constitution) and current doshic imbalances. For instance, excessive masturbation might lead to vata imbalance, which can manifest as mental fog, fatigue, or even feelings of guilt as these symptoms are often associated with heightened vata levels.

The impact on your relationship requires a more nuanced approach. It might be worth reflecting on whether masturbation is becoming a substitute for emotional or physical intimacy with your partner. Open communication with them can help address feelings of distance. If self-pleasure is affecting your connection, try scheduling times of intimacy or activities that promote closeness and bonding.

From an Ayurvedic standpoint, it’s important to maintain ojas, which is considered the essence of your immune and reproductive health. Frequent ejaculation might deplete ojas, leading to fatigue and perhaps impacting you on a deeper energetic level. To mitigate this, ensure a nutritious diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, which nourish the body and mind.

To maintain balance, consider practices like yoga and meditation, which enhance awareness and control over desires. This might help in moderating the habit naturally. Ayurveda also suggests consuming herbs like ashwagandha or shatavari to support vitality and balance the body.

If persistent guilt or negative feelings about masturbation persist, it might be helpful to explore why these emotions arise. Integrating mindfulness techniques can assist in reassessing personal habits, but for deeper concerns, seeking advice from a counselor or a knowledgeable guru might give better clarity.
