does yoga reduce weight - #36282

Abigail

I am really confused about whether yoga actually helps when it comes to weight loss. A couple of months ago, I started a yoga class because I thought it would be a nice way to relax and stretch out my body. I was kind of skeptical though, because I heard people say, "does yoga reduce weight?" but then some folks were like, "no, you need cardio!" Anyway, I’m doing these classes twice a week, and I feel great, but I don't see much change on the scale 🤷‍♀️. I mean, I also changed my diet a bit, cutting out junk food and trying to eat more veggies, but I don't know if that's helping or if it’s just the yoga. My friend who’s into running said that traditional workouts are better, which makes me question if I'm wasting my time. Doesn’t yoga burn calories? Or does yoga reduce weight more in terms of toning and overall health rather than just shedding pounds? Am I supposed to do other exercise on top of my yoga sessions? Really just trying to figure this out, I feel like everyone has a different opinion, and I neeed some guidance from those who really understand Ayurvedic principles or anything! 😩

Yoga can indeed play a role in weight management and overall wellness, although it may not result in the rapid weight loss sometimes associated with high-intensity cardio workouts. In Ayurveda, the practice of yoga is considered to support balance in the body and mind, aiding in reducing stress, improving circulation, and enhancing metabolic functions - all of which can contribute to gradual weight loss and not necessarily translate immediately to major changes on the scale.

Considering Ayurvedic principles, each individual has a unique dosha composition, which affects how they respond to various forms of exercise. Often, Kapha types, who are prone to weight gain, benefit from more vigorous activities, but if yoga becomes steadily practiced, it can absolutely help in maintainijg a healthy weight through improving muscle tone and supporting overall metabolic health.

About supplements with other exercises, combining yoga with daily walking or a light form of cardio can enhance calorie burn while maintaining the calming effects of yoga. When practicing, focus on more dynamic styles of yoga like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, which are more active and can help in increasing heart rate and thereby contributing more to weight loss.

Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to understand your unique constitution and any imbalances that may be influencing your weight. They will factor in your diet, lifestyle, and yoga routine to give you more personalized advice. Since you’ve made dietary changes, continue on this path – whole, unprocessed foods and plenty of vegetables align well with yoga and Ayurvedic principles.

In conclusion, yoga can be effective for weight reduction when part of a holistic lifestyle strategy that includes mindful eating and regular, appropriate physical activity. Engaging both mind and body can foster long-term health and balance, as Ayurveda suggests. Continue to honor your body’s journey; it may take time, but sustainability is key.

Yoga can contribute to weight loss, but its effects are more nuanced than what typically high-intensity exercises might offer. In the context of Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, yoga aligns with correcting doshas, improving agni, and balancing the nadis. This practice harmonizes the body and mind, indirectly supporting weight management through improved metabolism and better stress management.

While yoga may not burn calories at a rapid rate compared to vigorous cardio exercises, it offers significant benefits like increased flexibility, muscle tone, and mental clarity. These promote a lifestyle that supports sustainable weight loss. By focusing on specific asanas, such as Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) and twisting postures, you can stimulate digestion and the lymphatic system, aiding in detoxifying the body and optimizing metabolic function. Practice these postures consistently, at least five times a week, for better results complemented by your existing classes.

Your dietary changes also play an essential role. In Siddha-Ayurveda, diet is crucial for balancing the doshas and supporting weight loss. Eating more vegetables and reducing processed foods help maintain a healthy agni. Avoid foods that increase kapha dosha, which can contribute to weight gain. Opt for lighter meals that are easy to digest, and consider incorporating warming spices like ginger and turmeric to enhance digestive fire.

If your aim is significant weight reduction, combining yoga with more dynamic activities like brisk walking or some light cardio can be beneficial. It’s important to listen to your body’s needs and maintain a healthy routine that doesn’t overstress you. Consistency and balance across physical activity and diet, guided by Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, can help you achieve a balanced state of health. Remember, weight loss is more sustainable when attained through gradual lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.
