Doctors' responses

Managing stiffness and pain after an injury like this, from an Ayurvedic perspective, involves addressing any underlying dosha imbalances and supporting tissue recovery. Given the nature of your symptoms, there’s likely a predominance of Vata dosha, which governs movement and is often involved in pain and stiffness.

First, consider applying warm sesame oil to the affected areas. Massage gently for about 10-15 minutes, at least once a day, preferably in the morning. Sesame oil is warming and can help pacify aggravated Vata. If you have access to it, consider using Mahanarayan oil, which is specifically designed for joint health and can be more effective.

Internal support can be useful as well. Ashwagandha, a potent adaptogen, has anti-inflammatory properties and can help support joint function. You may use Ashwagandha powder, about 1 teaspoon, with warm milk before sleep to aid healing and reduce stiffness. Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for dosage suited to your constitution.

Your diet should be warm and nourishing, leaning away from cold, dry, or raw foods that can increase Vata. Warm, cooked meals like soups, stews, and kitchari are beneficial. Incorporate spices like turmeric, ginger, and cumin which can improve digestion and reduce inflammation.

Practicing gentle Yoga can aid in improving flexibility and circulation. Pose like Bhujangasana (Cobra), and wrist and elbow rotations may help reduce stiffness. Always approach new exercises cautiously, ensuring you feel no pain while practicing.

Lastly, if there’s severe pain or restricted movement, consult a healthcare provider to rule out fractures or other serious issues. While Ayurveda offers significant support, ensuring no structural damage is crucial for long-term health.
