For longstanding dry, itchy eyes leading to redness and blurry vision, Ayurveda considers such symptoms to primarily relate to imbalances in the Vata and Pitta doshas. Long-term management involves lifestyle and dietary adaptations, herbal remedies, and eye exercises.

First, focus on diet to pacify Vata and Pitta. Consume warm, oily, and grounding foods, favoring items like ghee, sesame oil, cumin, coriander, and carrots. Reduce dry, spicy, and overly pungent foods as they may aggravate symptoms. Aloe vera juice, taken in the morning, can help cool Pitta and nourish tissues.

Hydration is key. Regularly consuming herbal teas like chamomile or fennel support Vata balance and provide a cooling effect. Aim to stay well-hydrated throughout the day, but avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol intake, which can dry out bodily tissues.

Ghee application—a soothing remedy known as “Netra Basti.” Warm some Triphala ghee (or plain ghee if unavailable) and gently apply around the eyes, avoiding direct contact with the eyes themselves. Do this in the evening before bed to allow absorption.

Eye exercises can enhance circulation and relieve strain. Regular palming (gently cupping eyes with warm palms) and eye rotation exercises, performed three times a day, help maintain flexibility and alleviate discomfort.

Minimize screen time to give eyes periods of rest. Lighting should be adjusted to avoid glare and reduce strain. Take frequent breaks using the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Include more downtime for the eyes to prevent worsennig symptoms.

If symptoms persist or escalate, consultation with an ophthalmologist is necessary to rule out any underlying serious conditions. Ayurvedic measures serve as complementary approaches but should not replace professional medical intervention when required.

Your long-term issue with dry and itchy eyes, along with new blurry vision, suggests a possible aggravation of Vata dosha. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, this condition often points towards an imbalance in the body’s doshas leading to symptoms we’re seeing. Dryness and itchiness can be indicative of excess Vata, while blurry vision may arise from depletion in the Rasa and Rakta dhatus, the body’s liquid and blood components, and disturbances in the nadis around the eyes.

First, focus on hydration and lubrication to pacify the aggravated Vata. Consider applying Triphala Eyewash. Triphala is a revered herbal formulation known for its soothing and nourishing effects. To prepare, boil one teaspoon of Triphala powder in water, let it cool down to room temperature, and strain it to make an eyewash. Rinse your eyes with this solution once daily.

Incorporate Ghee into your diet as it helps in balancing Vata and provides the necessary lubrication internally, which may help with ocular dryness. A half teaspoon of Ghee on an empty stomach with warm water in the morning can be beneficial.

Include regular consumption of foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like flaxseeds and walnuts, as these are known to support eye health. Ensuring a diet laden with hydrated foods such as cucumber, celery, and fruits can help nourish the Rasa dhatu.

For your blurry vision, ensure to address potential Kapha imbalance by avoiding mucous-forming foods like dairy and fried foods, which might exacerbate the issue. Keep a regular sleep schedule, as this supports eye health and overall Vata balance.

However, given the new blurry vision, please do seek an evaluation from an ophthalmologist without delay. This symptom needs professional assessment to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
