can we eat curd after chicken - #40671

Noah

I am really confused about whether we can eat curd after chicken. Last week, I went to this great restaurant with my family, and I had this delicious chicken curry, super spicy (my stomach was kinda feeling it later, but it was worth it!). Anyway, I love curd, so I wanted to have some to cool off after that spicy meal. But my cousin was like, "No way! You can't eat curd after chicken!! It's bad for you!" I didn’t know what to think. I mean, I have eaten curd after chicken before, and I’ve been fine... but maybe I was just lucky? Like, could it seriously cause any digestion issues or something? I read some articles about food combinations and heard mixing certain foods isn’t always great, but it all seems kinda confusing. I guess my question is, can we eat curd after chicken, really? Is it okay or does it mess with digestion? Should I avoid it in the future? I don't wanna end up with an upset stomach!! Any advice would be super helpful! Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Eating curd after chicken can indeed be a bit controversial, especially from an Ayurvedic perspective. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of proper food combinations, as incompatible combinations can lead to digestion issues, known as ‘viruddha ahara.’ According to classical texts, curd is considered heavy, heating and sour. Meanwhile, chicken is also heavy and has a heating effect on the body. The combination of two heating elements could disrupt your digestive fire, or ‘agni’, potentially leading to indigestion or discomfort.

Curd, being a fermented food, increases kapha and pitta doshas, and when combined with chicken, it may further aggravate these doshas, possibly causing imbalance in your body. It could lead to issues like skin disorders, acidity, or digestion troubles over long-term consumption. However, this won’t necessarily cause immediate issues like an upset stomach for everyone, as individual constitution plays a significant role.

If you have a strong digestive fire (agni), and experience no discomfort post-consumption, it might be okay for occasional indulgence. However, to support digestive health, consider spacing out such meals or opting for buttermilk instead, which is lighter and more easily digestible than curd. Drinking buttermilk, preferably around noon when your digestive power is strongest, is often recommended in Ayurveda and can provide a cooling, soothing effect without disturbing your digestion.

In summary, it’s generally safer to avoid curd right after consuming chicken. Instead, wait for a few hours or integrate it into a separate meal that complements your body type and current digestive state better. When dining, pay attention to how your body responds and adapt as necessary. If any concerns arise, do consult with a qualified Ayurvedic expert for personalized insights tailored to your specific constitution.

In Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, certain food combinations are indeed understood to impact digestion and overall health. Eating curd after chicken is generally not advised, primarily because they are considered incompatible (known as viruddha ahara). Chicken, being a source of protein, and curd, being a fermented dairy product, have differing energetics and digestive timings. When consumed close together, they might cause digestive confusion—not always, but potentially.

The reason behind this in terms of Ayurveda is agni or digestive fire. Chicken increases pitta dosha and this, when combined with the qualities of curd—which is inherently heavy and cooling—can dampen agni. This weakening of digestion can lead to the formation of ama, or toxins, and may result in bloating, or indigestion over time. Especially since you mentioned spicy chicken, your body could feel overheated initially and curd’s cooling nature might seem appealing, but it could interfere with the digestive heat needed.

If you enjoy curd, try to consume it separately, giving a gap of at least an hour to let each digest properly. You could also opt for light buttermilk flavored with ginger or cumin instead, as it’s easier on the stomach after a heavy meal. Lastly, observe how your body reacts; Ayurveda encourages attention to personal digestion and prakriti. If you find no discomfort, occasional indulgence might be fine. However, routine mixing isn’t typically endorsed for optimal digestion.
