can we eat apple and curd together - #40754
I am really confused about something I've heard lately. My friend was saying how she loves eating apples and curd together, but I thought mixing fruits with dairy is a big no-no in Ayurveda? Like, is it okay?! I’ve been feeling kinda bloated after I tried it last week... but then again, maybe it was something else?? The other day, I had this big crunchy apple from the market and I was just craving for some creamy curd on the side, right? I mixed them both together and it tasted really good, but then afterwards, I felt bad, like my stomach was mad at me or somthing. Did I just mess up my digestion or is that normal? It's been on my mind and I just can't shake the feeling that maybe apples and curd together isn't such a great combo! I mean, can we eat apple and curd together or should I stick to one or the other? Also, are there better pairings that won’t leave me feeling so bloated, or is there a specific time I should eat these individually? Seriously, any thoughts would be super helpful! I'm really trying to get my eating habits sorted, haha!

Mixing apples and curd can indeed lead to digestive issues according to Ayurvedic principles. In Ayurveda, each food has its own taste, energy, and effect on the body, and combining foods with opposite qualities or incompatible properties can hinder digestion, disrupting your agni (digestive fire) and causing bloating or discomfort like you experienced. Curd is considered heavy, sour and heating, while apples are sweet and provide a cooling effect. Such contrasting properties may cause doshic imbalances, particularly causing vata and kapha disturbances, leading to the bloating sensation you mentioned.
In Ayurveda, combining fruits with dairy, especially sour dairies like curd, is generally discouraged. It’s often best to consume fruits separately, particularly those with a high water content like apples, to allow them to be digested more efficiently and avoid fermentation effects in the stomach. This might be why you felt bloated after eating them together.
If you want to incorporate apples and curd into your diet without these unpleasant effects, consider enjoying them at different times. Eat apples at least 30 minutes before or after consuming curd. This allows each food’s digestive process to occur without conflict. Apples can be enjoyed as a snack or between meals, while curd can pair well with lunch, helping in the digestive process by balancing the meal’s freshness and heaviness.
For better pairing, consider mixing apples with other foods like nuts or a light sprinkle of cinnamon, which support digestion and provide warmth that complements the apple’s properties. If you’re seeking dairy, opt for buttermilk or yogurt smoothies without sour fruits. Monitor any continued digestive discomfort; evaluate dietary combinations and consult a healthcare provider for personal advice regarding potential intolerances or other underlying health concerns.
