Drinking ash gourd juice daily can be quite beneficial, but it needs to be approached thoughtfully, considering your particular body constitution or “prakriti,” and any current imbalances. Ash gourd, known as “Vellari” in the Siddha tradition, is known for its cooling properties, making it especially useful for balancing pitta doshas, which relate to the elements of fire and water. If your digestive issues are pitta-related, such as heat-induced inflammation, bloating, or acidity, ash gourd may indeed help soothe this discomfort.
However, ash gourd can potentially aggravate Vata dosha due to its cold, heavy, and potentially damp qualities. If your bloating and irregularity stem from a sluggish or erratic metabolism common in Vata imbalances, too much ash gourd juice may exacerbate the issue. To gain the benefits without tipping your balance, you could start with about 100-150 ml of fresh ash gourd juice in the morning on an empty stomach. Observe how your body responds over a week.
Warmed up juice or mixed with ginger can mitigate the cold effect, which can make it more suitable if you have Vata-type digestion issues. Watch for any signs of increased coldness in the body, such as feeling chilly or stiffness, which might indicate an imbalance.
Adjust your diet to support your digestive fire (Agni), like including spices that kindle digestion, such as ginger or cumin. If you experience no adverse effects, it’s reasonable to continue. However, stop immediately if symptoms like excess mucus, chills, or loose stools occur, and consider consulting a practitioner for more tailored advice to prevent potential issues.
