which milk is good for kidney patients - #41479

Jaxon

I am really confused about what kind of milk is good for kidney patients. Recently, my dad was diagnosed with kidney issues, and he’s been on this strict diet from the doc. Like, he's gotta avoid a lot of stuff, and the nutritionist mentioned something about milk. He loved drinking whole milk before all of this, but now I'm not sure. I heard that some milks are easier on the kidneys, and I think someone said almond milk is better, but then my friend said coconut milk might be okay too? My dad is taking it kinda hard and really misses his milk. I mean, I don't wanna make it worse for him, you know? He has been feeling a bit more tired lately and I just want to make sure he’s getting the right nutrients while still, like, enjoying his food and drink. Which milk is good for kidney patients? I really could use some advice on what to look for or if there are any other options I should consider. Also, are there any specific brands or types that are recommended? I really appreciate any guidance! It’s just so stressful trying to figure all this out.

Doctors' responses

For kidney patients, choosing the right milk depends largely on specific needs and restrictions. Generally, whole milk can be high in phosphorus and potassium, sometimes not ideal for those with kidney issues. Instead, opt for plant-based alternatives like almond, rice or coconut milk. Almond and coconut milk indeed often have lower potassium and phosphorus content compared to cow’s milk, making them suitable choices. However, unsweetened versions are preferable as sugar can be problematic.

Also check labels for added phosphates, as these can increase phosphorus content significantly, which is not good for kidneys. Almond milk typically has a more favorable profile for kidney patients because it naturally has low potassium and phosphorus, though you should still check each brand’s nutritional content. Coconut milk can be varied in nutrients – choose the kinds that are lower in these minerals too.

It’s also important to look for fortification. Choose those fortified with calcium and vitamin D, but again without phosphates. Rice milk is another option, it has a neutral profile but often comes with added sugars, so opt for unsweetened varieties.

For exact brands, it’s worth consulting with a nutritionist who understands your dad’s health history. They could have access to more updated, specific product recommendations. Importantly, your dad’s overall fluid intake should be considered alongside any dietary changes, since fluid management is crucial in kidney-related health concerns.

If he’s feeling more tired lately, nutrition absorption might require attention – ensure well-rounded meals that support energy without overloading his kidneys. Suggest to him small, consistent meals to maintain energy levels, incorporating easy to digest proteins like boiled vegetables, and low-sodium choices. Consider consulting further with a registered dietitian who can tailor a plan fitting his precise needs and constraints. Monitoring symptoms like fatigue can give clues to dietary impacts, so keep an eye on these changes to his well-being.
