is shatavari good for weight gain - #41508
I am really curious about something. I’ve been struggling with my weight for a while now, and it’s been kind of frustrating. I generally have a fast metabolism, like super fast, and putting on weight has always been tough for me. Recently, I heard about shatavari and how people use it for various reasons, but I’m really interested to know, is shatavari good for weight gain? A friend of mine swears by it, saying that it helped her gain some much-needed pounds when she was feeling too skinny. I’ve tried so many things already, you know, protein shakes, calories counts, and all that stuff, but nothing seems to stick. Hah, I even thought about eating more junk, but that's just not a healthy route. My digestion is generally okay, not perfect, but okay. Do you think shatavari could help me? I worry if it will actually work or if it’s just another fad. What do you all think? And how would I even take it? Pills, powder, tea? Just trying to figure out if I should give it a shot. Thanks in advance for any help!

Shatavari, known in Ayurveda as Asparagus racemosus, is considered a rasayana—an herb that rejuvenates and promotes overall wellbeing. In traditional texts like Charaka Samhita, Shatavari is revered for its role in nourishing the dhatus (tissues) and supporting a balanced agni (digestive fire). For individuals with a fast metabolism, typical of a dominant Vata dosha, weight gain can indeed be challenging.
Shatavari is known for its anabolic properties. It promotes the building of tissues and is especially supportive for building ojas, the essence of resilience and vitality. The herb supports digestive processes, essential for nutrient absorption, which is critical when your goal is weight gain. In your case, with a moderate digestion level, boosting this capacity with Shatavari may indeed be beneficial. It helps to increase kapha in the body — the dosha associated with building and nourishment.
To harness its benefits for weight gain, Shatavari is often consumed as a powder or in tablet form, quite easily available in these two forms. A common practice is to take about 1/2 teaspoon of Shatavari powder twice daily, mixed with warm milk or honey. You could also try the capsules, taking two with meals. Consistency in intake is important to observe tangible changes over time.
It is recommended to follow this regimen for about 3-4 months to see results, keeping track of any changes in weight and overall vitality. Couple this with a diet rich in healthy fats and proteins – like whole grains, nuts, and avocados – while also engaging in light, strength-building exercises to support weight gain.
However, it is crucial to be cautious. Monitor how your body responds initially, and consider consulting with a trained Ayurvedic practitioner, to ensure it aligns well with your unique prakriti and any other conditions you may have. While Shatavari is generally safe, individuals with hormone-sensitive conditions or who are on specific medications should approach it carefully. At the slightest hint of any adverse reaction, seek out professional advice immediately.
