does curd make you sleepy - #41602

Lincoln

I am struggling to stay awake during the day and was doing some research when I came across a post that said, "does curd make you sleepy?" I've been feeling super tired lately, and I noticed that every time I have yogurt or curd for breakfast, I kind of crash after. Almost like I go into a food coma! It's like an instant wave of drowsiness hits me, and I can’t function properly. I usually make a smoothie with curd in the mornings, and while it tastes good, I was wondering if there's something about curd that could be making me feel this way? Is it the probiotics or something else? Last week, I even had a big bowl of curd rice for dinner, thinking it would be light, but I ended up falling asleep on the couch for hours. 😴 I’m just curious if others have experienced this and if magnesium or other nutrients in curd play a role in making you feel sleepy? Or is this just my body acting weirdly? Should I try switching to another breakfast option? Would love any insight on "does curd make you sleepy" because I really need to figure this out! Thanks!

Curd, also known as yogurt, is a fascinating food from an Ayurvedic perspective. It may contribute to your feelings of sleepiness for several reasons. According to Ayurveda, curd has ‘guru’ (heavy) qualities, which might be making you feel sluggish. Its heavy nature can be tamasic, promoting lethargy and dullness, especially when consumed at inappropriate times or in large quantities.

When you eat curd in the morning as part of your smoothie, it may aggravate Kapha dosha, especially if your digestive fire (agni) is low or Kapha is predominant in your constitution. A sluggish digestion can lead to a build-up of ama (toxins), worsening feelings of heaviness and sleepiness. Curd is often best consumed during lunchtime, when the digestive fire is strongest, rather than in the morning or at night.

The probiotics in curd, while beneficial for gut health, are unlikely the direct cause of your drowsiness. Magnesium, which is present in curd in small amounts, generally promotes relaxation but isn’t usually enough to induce sleepiness unless consumed in large doses.

You might find benefit in switching to lighter breakfast options such as warm porridge made from oats with spices like cardamom or cinnamon to enhance digestion. Another option could be warm herbal teas to balance the dosha. If you’d still like the creaminess of yogurt, consuming it diluted, such as in buttermilk or in smoothies with heating spices like ginger, can help.

Experiment with these changes and observe if there’s a positive effect on your energy levels during the day. If this continues to affect your daily life, consider consulting a healthcare professional or an Ayurvedic practitioner. Remember too, individual experiences can vary, so pay attention to what your body is telling you!

Curd, also referred to as yogurt in some regions, can indeed make some individuals feel sleepy due to a few different factors, especially if there’s an underlying imbalance in your body’s doshas or digestive fire, which we call agni in Ayurveda. From the perspective of Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, the feeling of drowsiness after consuming curd could be related to its Kapha-increasing qualities. Curd is naturally heavy, sour, and has a sweet post-digestive effect, which can increase Kapha dosha, especially if your digestive fire or agni isn’t as strong, leading to sluggishness or heaviness.

Curd also undergoes fermentation, a process that enhances its probiotic content. While this can be beneficial for digestion in many cases, it might actually aggravate certain digestive issues if your Vata dosha is already out of balance, leading to lethargy or sleepiness. Additionally, due to its cold and thick nature, consuming curd in large quantities, especially in the morning or late evening, might not be optimal for everyone as it can dampen your metabolic fire.

If you’ve noticed this pattern of tiredness after eating curd-based meals, it might be helpful to modify your consumption. Try switching your breakfast option to something lighter and easier on digestion, such as warm porridge with spices like ginger or cinnamon, which helps invigorate digestion. Alternatively, if you enjoy your smoothies, consider using buttermilk instead of curd, which is lighter and easier to digest, or try having the smoothie at midday when digestion might be a bit more robust.

If you still wish to consume curd, having it during lunchtime or mixing it with warming spices like black pepper or cumin can help balance its heaviness and make it easier on your digestion, potentially reducing the drowsiness you’re experiencing.

If this condition persists or affects your daily life significantly, it might be useful to consult with a healthcare practitioner for a personalized examination to ensure there’s no deeper Kapha imbalance or other underlying issues that need addressing. Ensuring adequate rest, proper hydration, and mindful mealtimes can also contribute to improving your energy levels throughout the day.
