how does hing work on baby stomach - #41680

Grace

I am really worried about my little one. My baby has been experiencing some pretty bad gas and tummy troubles lately, and I heard that hing can help with these issues. But honestly, I’m kinda muddled on how does hing work on baby stomach. We’ve tried massaging her belly and avoiding certain foods, but nothing seems to help. Last night was especially tough — she was super fussy and I could just hear her little tummy making all these gurgling noises. Poor thing just couldn’t get comfortable. A friend suggested using hing, but I’m unsure about the dosages and how to safely give it to a baby. Like, should I mix it with water or something? Or is just a pinch enough? I just don’t want to do anything that’ll make it worse! I read that hing is great for digestion but how does hing work on baby stomach in terms of being safe and effective? Is it alright for tiny tummies? I mean, I want her to feel better, but I also don’t want to risk any reactions or tummy aches from adding something new in our routine. Any tips would be super helpful! Thanks!

Hing, or asafoetida, is indeed often used in traditional Indian medicine, including Ayurveda, to aid digestion and relieve gas. In Ayurveda, hing is known to balance Vata dosha, which can help in easing bloating and gas-related discomfort. The key component of hing helps increase the digestive fire or ‘agni’, allowing for easier digestion.

For babies with gas, applying hing externally is considered a safe approach. Here’s how you can do it: take a pinch of hing and mix it with a few drops of warm water to make a paste. Then gently apply this paste around your baby’s navel area. Be cautious not to apply it directly on the belly button or too close to the skin folds, so that there isn’t irritation. Hing is powerful, and you’ll really only need a small amount for effect.

It’s important, however, to monitor for any skin reactions the first time you apply it. If you notice any redness or irritation, you should discontinue using it immediately. While many parents find this helpful, every child is unique, and baby skin can respond differently. It’s always good to test a small area first for any allergic reactions.

Avoid giving hing internally to infants, as their digestive systems are still developing, and even natural substances can cause unnecessary stress. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is best to consult a pediatrician to rule out any underlying issues. Continue gentle massages and consider laying her on her stomach under supervision, which can sometimes offer relief from the discomfort.

Lastly, patience is key; babies often outgrow these phases. Keep up with the nourishing and warm foods if she’s eating solids, and ensure she gets well-burped after feeds to minimize gassing situations. Stay observant, and should any concerns about her health arise, seeking medical advice remains the safest option.

Hing, or asafoetida, is indeed known in Ayurveda for its digestive benefits, and it’s particularly effective in relieving gas and bloating. In terms of how hing works, it primarily helps by reducing vata dosha, which is often the root cause of bloating and gas. It enhances the digestive fire, or agni, which can be quite helpful for easing discomfort in a baby’s tummy.

However, given that you’re considering using it for a baby, caution is essential. Babies are quite sensitive, and while hing can be beneficial, you should avoid directly ingesting it by mouth at such an early age due to its strong potency. For infants, it’s more appropriate to use hing externally. Here’s what you can do:

Take a very small pinch of hing and dissolve it in a few drops of warm water to form a thin paste. Rub this paste gently around the baby’s navel, not directly on it. This method should be sufficient to help relieve their discomfort without the risk of ingesting. Applying the paste twice a day, especially before the baby sleeps, might yield better results in easing the gas and colic.

Another thing to consider is your baby’s diet (and the mother’s diet if breastfeeding). Ensure that foods known to cause gas, like specific legumes or very fibrous vegetables, are minimized. Massaging the baby’s belly in a clockwise direction can sometime also support their digestion process.

If your baby’s discomfort continues or worsens, consulting a healthcare professional swiftly would be the best approach. In such young children, symptoms could sometimes signal underlying issues that require medical attention. Safety first, as always, especially with young ones.
