how to use mulethi for cough - #41815

Bella

I am feeling really frustrated because I’ve had this annoying cough for what seems like ages now! I tried all these over-the-counter medicines, but nothing feels like it’s working. Then my grandma mentioned mulethi, saying it’s great for respiratory issues and coughs. Just the other night, I remember struggling to sleep, and she brought me some mulethi tea she made. The flavor was kinda interesting, really earthy, but I couldn’t tell if it helped much because my cough kept me up all night. I’ve read some stuff about how to use mulethi for cough relief, like making it into a syrup or mixing it with honey, but I honestly don’t know where to start. Should I just chew on the root? Does it need to be made in a certain way to be effective? I also wonder if there are other ingredients that can boost its power? Also, I've started to worry if I’m using the right amount. Am I supposed to use it daily or just when the cough is really bad? Would love some tips from anyone here who's figure out how to use mulethi for cough, like specific preparations or things to avoid. Thanks!

Mulethi, also known as Licorice root, is indeed a valuable herb in Ayurveda for treating cough and respiratory issues. To maximize its effectiveness, it’s important to use it properly. For your cough, preparing a simple mulethi decoction might be most beneficial. Start by taking a small piece of mulethi root, about 1-2 inches, and boiling it in 2 cups of water. Let it simmer until the water reduces to half. Strain the liquid, and you can drink this decoction while it’s warm. This preparation can be consumed 1-2 times a day.

Chewing raw mulethi can also be beneficial, especially for soothing a dry throat. However, for a more potent remedy, you might consider using mulethi powder. Combine 1 teaspoon of mulethi powder with 1 teaspoon of honey, consuming this mixture once or twice a day. Honey not only enhances the flavor but also increases its effectiveness, thanks to its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

To bolster its benefits, you could add a pinch of ginger or turmeric, both known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Mixing mulethi with warm milk along with these spices before bedtime can be soothing, helping you rest better.

It’s crucial to be cautious about the quantity and usage frequency. While mulethi is beneficial, excessive intake can cause side effects like hypertension or water retention due to its glycyrrhizin content. Hence, it’s typically advised not to use mulethi daily over extended periods—more like for an acute phase of your cough. If your symptoms persist, especially if they’re severe, an assessment by a healthcare provider is advisable.

Mulethi, known as licorice, can be a helpful ally in soothing stubborn coughs. It works mainly due to its expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for easing respiratory discomfort. Let’s get into the practical ways you can use it.

First, while chewing on the mulethi root is a traditional practice, its effects can be enhanced when prepared as a decoction or tea. For a simple preparation, take about a teaspoon of dried mulethi root (or a small piece of the stick if using whole) and boil it in two cups of water. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the liquid reduces to one cup. Strain this and sip while warm. You can do this up to twice a day. Adding a teaspoon of honey once it’s cooled a bit can enhance its soothing effects.

If you’re interested in a more potent preparation, consider mixing a pinch of powdered mulethi with honey and ginger paste. Take about half a teaspoon twice a day. This combo not only eases coughs but also helps with throat irritation due to ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties.

It’s generally safe to use drift this daily until your symptoms improve, but keep an eye on your body’s reactions. Overuse of mulethi can lead to elevated blood pressure due to its glycyrrhizin content, so it’s crucial not to exceed the recommended dosage, especially if you are prone to hypertension.

If your cough persists despite trying these methods, or you experience any other worrying symptoms, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional. In the world of Ayurvedic and Siddha systems, acknowledging the holistic balance of body elements is key, so look out for signs your system might be responding unfavorably.

Lastly, combining mulethi with warm fluids like soups or herbal teas and incorporating gentle breathing exercises can support your respiratory system further. Remember to also maintain proper hydration and rest. Feel free to reach out if further clarification is needed on any aspect of this preparation.
