Skincare Routine and Product Recommendations for Oily Skin - #42029

Client_2e7ee5

Hello, I am a 19 year old girl. My skin type ranges from combination to oily. I also have blackheads and white heads and open pores. Near my eyebrows, and on my upper cheeks, i have some very small black bumps , don't know what they are called, but i think they are from previous pimples maybe? My face is slightly darker than my neck and hands, and my overall complexion kinda gets darker than usual in winter. I use a lemon based oil control facewash (ingredients: EDTA, glycerine, salycilic acid, ammonium lorath sulfate, carbomer, cocamido propyl butane, cocodiethanol amide, sodium hydroxide, eprict shell powder, lemon peel extract, PGE 40 hydrogenated, castor oil, DMDM hydantoine, scented oil). My moisturizer is a one for combination and oily skin, that is also citrus based. i skip sunscreen most of the time, but when i do use, i use the missha cotton sunscreen spf 50. I think my lips are also getting kinda dark, i want them pink naturally. Please suggest some good products and a good skincare routine according to my skin type and also advice me on what exactly i should do in order to get rid of all the mentioned problems( like switching products, improving routine, or food habits etc.). Also, i know sunscreen is important. Now do i have to use sunscreen even when im indoors, and should i use sunscreen with different spfs in and out? Will using sunscreen with high spf harm my skin? If switching products is recommended, then please provide suggestions with brand names . (i cover my face with a scarf when i go out to protect from sun). Also do rays from digital screen harm the skin? like do they have uv rays, and do i need to wear sunscreen even at night if im working in front of screens? . Thank you.

Doctors' responses

You’re dealing with combination-to-oily skin that often experiences blackheads, whiteheads, and some pigmentation issues. This can be attributed to excess oil production, which in Ayurveda may be related to a Pitta-Kapha imbalance. Let’s try refining your skincare and lifestyle to address these concerns effectively using Ayurvedic principles.

First, let’s consider a personalized skincare routine that complements your current setup while minimizing potential imbalances:

### Morning Routine

1. Face Wash: While lemon-based cleansers can be beneficial for oily skin due to their astringent nature, some of the synthetic chemicals in your current facewash might irritate. Opt for a gentle Ayurvedic face wash with neem or sandalwood, which are known for purifying and soothing effects.

2. Toner: Incorporate a herbal toner, like rose water or witch-hazel post cleansing. This will help firm the skin without stripping essential moisture.

3. Moisturizer: Keep your moisturizer lightweight. You might switch to an aloe vera-based lotion, which hydrates without making your skin greasy.

4. Sunscreen: Essential daily! Even indoors, screens can emit blue light harmful to skin. Use an SPF 30 as a base indoors and SPF 50 outdoors. Blue light specific sunscreens are available if screen exposure is high.

### Nighttime Routine

1. Cleanse: Ensure removal of all make-up and dirt. An oil cleansing method with jojoba oil can effectively dissolve sebum blocking pores.

2. Exfoliate: Use a mild scrub with fine particles or face pack with multani mitti (fuller’s earth) and turmeric once or twice a week.

3. Spot Treatment: Dab tea tree oil on blackheads and small bumps for its antiseptic properties.

4. Lip Care: Apply a natural lip balm infused with rose or almond oil for pinker lips over time.

### Lifestyle & Diet Adjustments

- Hydration: Water with lemon or cucumber slices can help flush out toxins. - Diet: Eat cooling foods like cucumber, melons, and green leafy vegetables. Avoid extreme spicy, oily, and processed foods. - Sleep & Stress: Adequate rest is important. Practice daily meditation or yoga, which may reduce stress-related skin issues.

### Additional Considerations

- Screen Time: Yes, digital screens emit blue light, not UV rays, but it’s still wise to protect your skin. - Product Shift: Brands like Forest Essentials or Kama Ayurveda in India offer chemical-free options that blend traditional herbs with contemporary needs.

- Professional Consultation: Persistent skin issues like pigmentation and excessive bumps may benefit from a visit to a dermatologist.

These holistic enhancements aim to balance your skin’s natural oils while nurturing overall health. Consistency is key!

Considering your combination to oily skin, blackheads, and the issues you’re facing, it sounds like your dosha might have some pitta and kapha imbalances. Here’s a Siddha-Ayurvedic approach combined with modern skincare advice to manage your skin concerns:

First, let’s look at your current products. Lemon-based products can be too harsh and potentially irritating, especially for sensitive areas and those with pimples. Switch to a more gentle cleanser that targets excess oil, such as one with neem or turmeric properties, which are known in Ayurveda for their antibacterial and pitta-pacifying features.

For moisturizer, choose something lightweight and non-comedogenic. Aloe vera gel mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil can work well. Aloe calms the skin while tea tree oil targets blemishes. Ensure your skincare products are alcohol-free to avoid further dryness or imbalance.

Exfoliate regularly with a gentle scrub containing papaya or sandalwood, about 1-2 times a week, to work against those blackheads and whiteheads. Avoid over-exfoliating, which can strip the skin of natural oils and lead to more oil production.

Regarding the sunscreen dilemma, yes, it’s important. You should use it even indoors, as UVA rays can penetrate windows. Digital screens emit blue light which can affect skin but sunscreen does help with that, especially when including ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. High SPF won’t damage skin, but day-to-day SPF 30 is typically sufficient indoors; use higher when outdoors for prolonged periods. Stick to non-greasy sunscreen gels or fluids suited for oily skin.

For diet, reduce intake of spicy or oily foods that may aggravate pitta. Include more cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, and coconut water. Drink enough water to keep your skin hydrated from within.

Clear, pink lips could benefit from natural exfoliation—gently scrub with a homemade mix of honey and sugar, then apply some pure ghee before bed. This helps heal and moisturize.

If you need product suggestions, consider brands that focus on natural ingredients like Kama Ayurveda, Forest Essentials, or Himalaya Herbals, ensuring they’re suitable for your skin type.

Please consult a dermatologist if you experience severe or persistent issues, as they can provide personalized medical advice and treatments.
