are eggs good for liver - #42120

Isabella

I am really confused about my diet lately. My doctor said that I need to take better care of my liver because I had elevated liver enzymes last check-up, and now I'm trying to make sense of what foods are good for me. I keep hearing mixed things about eggs, and I don't know if I should eat them or not. Are eggs good for liver health? I used to love having eggs for breakfast—like, I could eat them every day! But now my friends are saying they might not be great for my liver, especially since I have to watch my cholesterol. I mean, the internet is just full of information, and it seems everyone has a different take. Some people say that eating eggs in moderation can be beneficial, while others tell me to avoid them altogether. Is there a specific amount that’s ok? Can they help with liver detoxification or something? I really want to make things better, but it's hard to know what to believe. Do you think incorporating eggs back into my diet would help or hinder my liver recovery?? I just feel lost and trapped in this whole what-do-I-eat phase. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks a ton!

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, we look at the holistic picture of health, which includes considering your dosha balance, digestive fire (agni), and overall constitution. Let’s address the confusion with eggs and liver health. Eggs provide proteins and nutrients but also contain cholesterol and saturated fats. For someone with elevated liver enzymes, moderation and balance are the key principles.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, eggs are generally considered rajasic, meaning they can increase stimulation and intensity in the mind and body. This is neither inherently good nor bad but calls for attention to balance with cooling, soothing foods if your liver is stressed. When considering whether to include eggs, evaluate your digestive capacity, particularly how your liver is currently functioning.

Eggs can be beneficial if prepared in a non-oily manner, avoiding heavy spices that may burden the liver. Boiled eggs could be a simple and gentlerchoice for your liver rather than fried or scrambled versions, especially when cooked in butter or oil. It’s okay to have eggs in moderation, perhaps 2-3 times a week, but always observe how your body responds.

For liver health, it’s vital to enhance the digestive fire without overloading it. Including liver-friendly foods such as leafy greens, turmeric, lemons, and herbs like milk thistle could support liver function and detoxification. Ensure your meals are balanced and light, emphasizing whole grains and fibres to aid proper digestion. Avoid processed foods, excess sugars, and anything that could potentially increase ama (toxins).

Exercise regularly to support metabolism, yet avoid pushing your limits. Additionally, ensure proper hydration and rest to facilitate natural detoxification processes. If symptoms like fatigue or jaundice appear, they need immediate medical evaluation.

Always communicate with your healthcare provider about significant dietary changes, especially with eggs, to tailor advice specifically to any medical treatment you are receiving.
