Managing swelling in the legs or pedal edema, especially when you have conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and anaemia, requires a well-rounded approach. It sounds like your liver and kidney functions are normal, which is good news; however, the haemoglobin level is low, so that could contribute to your symptoms.
In Ayurveda, we’d consider addressing the root imbalances, possibly including Kapha and Vata doshas, which can contribute to fluid retention and blood circulation issues. To begin with, I recommend considering triphala, a classical Ayurvedic formulation known for its detoxifying properties. It can be taken as triphala powder, 1 teaspoon mixed with warm water taken at night. It should help, aid digestion and ensure proper elimination of waste from the body, potentially reducing edema.
Dietary modification will be crucial here. Focusing on a light, easy-to-digest diet that works to balance your doshas; consider adding moong dal, which is nourishing yet gentle on the digestive system and can support the body’s natural detoxification pathways. Avoid very salty, processed foods, as they can exacerbate water retention in the body.
Lifestyle changes are equally important. Engage in regular gentle exercises like walking or yoga, which promote healthy circulation. Performing a self-massage with warm sesame oil can act soothing, enhancing blood circulation and helping reduce swelling. Drink warm water throughout, the day to assist with overall metabolism and keeping fluid retention at bay.
Given your haemoglobin is at 9%, you might need to investigate the cause of anaemia more thoroughly with a healthcare provider. Supplements with iron and vitamin C (supports iron absorption) should be considered, under professional guidance.
Ensure ongoing monitoring with your healthcare provider, especially since you also have diabetes and hypothyroidism. Work with them to adjust any medication that may need titration based on your conditions. If the swelling doesn’t improve or gets worse, it’s vital to re-evaluate with them to exclude other causes.
