Doctors' responses
Given the chronic nature of your armpit allergy and itching, it’s important to address this concern by balancing the doshas, particularly Pitta and Kapha, which may be contributing to the inflammation and itching. Based on Ayurvedic principles, here are some potential recommendations:
First, assess your current diet. Hot, spicy, or oily foods can aggravate Pitta, so these should be minimized. Prefer cool, light foods like cucumbers, gourds, and leafy greens which can help to pacify Pitta dosha. You can include herbs like coriander, cumin, and fennel to support digestion and soothe inflammation. Avoiding fermented and processed foods, as they can fuel the aggravation.
Consider applying a paste made from neem (Azadirachta indica) and turmeric (Curcuma longa). Combine neem powder and turmeric with water to form a smooth paste. Apply gently to the armpit area and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. Neem and turmeric are known for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially helping to alleviate itching and swelling.
It might also be beneficial to prepare a decoction of Triphala, as it aids in internal cleansing which may support skin health. Drink a glass of Triphala water first thing in the morning — steep a teaspoon of Triphala powder in a glass of warm water overnight to prepare this.
Mindful breathing or pranayama techniques such as Sheetali and Nadi Shodhana can help manage stress, which sometimes exacerbate skin conditions. Practice these for 5-10 minutes daily to promote relaxation and balance.
Ensure that the clothing you wear is loose and made of breathable fabrics like cotton. This prevents further irritation and allows the skin to breathe effectively.
If there is no improvement or if the pain and swelling continue to worsen, it’s critical to consult with a healthcare professional. Persistent or worsening symptoms could indicate a deeper underlying health issue that requires immediate attention. Remember, timely medical intervention is key.
