Doctors' responses
Chronic pain following lumbar fusion surgery can indeed be challenging to manage. In Ayurveda, pain in areas such as lower back, groin, ankles, and feet often relates to an imbalance in Vata dosha, characterised by dryness, coldness, and instability.
Firstly, I recommend focusing on pacifying Vata dosha through diet and lifestyle modifications. Begin with diet: integrate more warm, moist, and oil-rich foods like ghee, sesame oil, cooked vegetables, and whole grains. Spices such as ginger and cinnamon may also help. Avoid cold, dry, and raw foods that aggravate Vata, such as cold beverages and uncooked salads.
For physical therapy, gentle yoga postures such as Bhujangasana (Cobra pose) and gentle stretches can assist in improving flexibility and maintaining the health of your spine. However, ensure these are practiced under skilled supervision to avoid strain. Abhyanga (self-massage) with warm sesame oil can be beneficial. This practice helps reduce pain and enhances circulation. Massage particularly the affected areas following the direction of the muscles.
Include a daily routine that harmonizes Vata, with early bedtime before 10 pm and rising with the sun. Stress management is crucial as well; consider meditation or pranayama tailored to your capability.
You may have heard of various herbal preparations. Toconsider a consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic doctor to recommend specific herbs or formulations suitable for you, such as ‘Ashwagandha’ or ‘Shallaki’, which might aid inflammation and pain reduction.
Finally, if you experience severe pain or neurological symptoms, please consult you r healthcare provider. It is essential to make sure there’s no underlying pathology aggravating your symptoms post-surgery. Your doctor’s guidance will also help create a comprehensive plan that marries conventional treatments with Ayurveda for the best results.
