In Ayurveda, a cough accompanied by wheezing and phlegm is categorized under Kasa (cough) with a strong involvement of Tamaka Swasa (bronchial asthma-like symptoms) and Kapha-Vata Dushti. Since you are not experiencing breathlessness (Swasa Krichratta), the condition is currently localized in the Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory channels) without affecting the deeper “Prana” or vital life force. The Ayurvedic Perspective Kapha-Udbhavu (Phlegm Dominance): The presence of phlegm indicates that Avalambaka Kapha in the chest is increased and “Sanchaya” (accumulated). This sticky mucus obstructs the movement of air. Vata-Avarana (Wheezing): The “wheezing” sound is caused by Prana Vayu trying to move through these narrowed, mucus-filled channels. The friction of air against the phlegm creates the whistling sound. Agni-Mandya: Ayurveda often traces respiratory issues back to the gut. Weak digestive fire (Mandagni) leads to the formation of Ama (toxins), which then travels to the lungs and manifests as Kapha. Suggested Management from Kerala Ayurveda The goal is Kapha-Vilayana (liquefying the phlegm) and Vata-Anulomana (restoring the normal downward flow of air). 1. Dasamoolarishtam This is a cornerstone for all Vata-Kapha respiratory disorders. It acts as a “Shothahara” (anti-inflammatory) for the bronchial tubes and provides strength to the lungs. Dose: 20 ml mixed with an equal amount of lukewarm water, taken twice daily after meals. 2. Karpooradi Thailam (For External Application) This is a highly effective warming oil containing Camphor. It helps in “Vilayana” (melting) the thick phlegm stuck in the chest. Usage: Apply warm oil to the chest and back (interscapular region). Follow this with a warm salt-water compress or steam inhalation for 10 minutes. 3. Swasadamana Tablet This is a proprietary Kerala Ayurveda formulation specifically designed for wheezing and productive cough. It acts as a bronchodilator without the side effects of modern stimulants. Dose: 1 tablet twice daily after food with lukewarm water. 4. Agasthya Rasayanam This is a famous “Lehyam” (herbal jam) used for chronic respiratory issues. It is a “Rasayana,” meaning it not only clears the cough but also rejuvenates the lung tissue to prevent recurrence. Dose: 1 teaspoon (approx. 10g) followed by a cup of warm water or warm milk twice daily, ideally in the morning on an empty stomach and at bedtime. 5. Tulasi (Holy Basil) Drops Tulasi is “Kaphahara” and “Vataghna.” It helps in clearing the “Srotas” (channels) of the lungs. Dose: 2 to 3 drops in a glass of warm water, taken 3 to 4 times a day. Practical Clinical Tips Warmth is Key: Avoid all cold items (refrigerated water, curd, ice cream). Drink only “Shunti-Jala” (water boiled with dry ginger) throughout the day. The Honey Buffer: Since you have phlegm, taking your herbal powders or lehyams with Madhu (Honey) is beneficial. Honey is “Lekhana” (scraping) and helps remove the sticky Kapha from the throat and bronchi. Turmeric Smoke (Dhumapana): Inhaling the smoke of a small piece of burning Turmeric (Haridra) can provide instant relief from wheezing by drying up the excess moisture in the respiratory tract.

This is likely due to kapha accumulation with cold sensitivity in upper respiratory tract. Since phlegm is clear and no breathlessness, it can be managed well. Do this: Avoid cold air, AC, cold drinks completely Drink only warm water Take steam inhalation once daily Avoid curd, banana, cold milk, sweets Diet: Prefer warm, light food Khichdi, soups, ginger-based food Add black pepper and dry ginger in cooking Lifestyle: Keep chest and throat warm Avoid exposure to dust and cold wind Medicines: Sitopaladi churna 3 grams twice daily with honey Talisadi churna 3 grams twice daily with honey Yashtimadhu churna 1 gram twice daily with honey Trikatu churna 1/4 tsp after food twice daily Home support: 1 tsp honey + pinch of turmeric twice daily This will reduce cough, clear phlegm, and control wheezing gradually. Please don’t take this lightly. Since you’ve been experiencing symptoms for the past 6 months, it is important to first get a Chest X-ray done to rule out any underlying condition. In the meantime, you may start with: • Sitopaladi Churna with ghee and honey • Chandramrit Ras – 1 tablet, three times a day These can help provide symptomatic relief. However, this is not a complete treatment. A proper diagnosis and understanding of your condition is essential for long-term healing. Once your reports are ready, book a personalised consultation so we can plan a treatment approach tailored specifically to you.
I understand this can feel very frustrating — a cough that just doesn’t go away, especially when it worsens with cold, can disturb daily comfort. The good thing is: since there is no breathlessness and phlegm is clear, this usually points to a non-infectious, upper respiratory imbalance rather than a deep lung disease. Safe Ayurvedic Support (you can start) 1. For cough & mucus balance sitopaladi churna – ½ tsp with honey, 2–3 times daily after meals Helps reduce cough, soothes throat, clears mild phlegm 2. For airway sensitivity & wheezing talisadi churna – ½ tsp with warm water, twice daily Works well when there is wheezing + cold sensitivity 3. Strengthening lungs & immunity vasavaleha – 1 tsp twice daily Excellent for chronic cough, irritation, and mild wheezing Do steam inhalation once daily Please start the above treatment regularly and observe the response. Follow-up after 2–3 weeks is very important so we can assess your progress and make any necessary adjustments in medicines or dosage. Take care
