Digestion discomfort - #7857
I've been experiencing digestion issues, including constipation (motions not complete, sometimes one laxative tablet also dont work, followed by smelly farts and bumps on face, ulcers in mouth, the last stage is appetite loss)especially when I try including foods that aren't low in FODMAP. I've also noticed that I don't tolerate vitamins like biotin or multivitamins, nor antibiotics well, particularly when prescribed for infections. My diet is quite restricted,t may be contributing to deficiencies in essential nutrients like iron and B12. I’d like to get to the root cause of these problems. Could we consider options such as a colonoscopy or gut microbiome analysis to better understand and address the underlying issues?

Doctors’ responses
From an Ayurvedic perspective, your symptoms seem to suggest an imbalance in the digestive fire (Agni) and possibly an accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body. Digestive issues, like constipation and incomplete bowel movements, along with skin eruptions (bumps on the face) and ulcers in the mouth, may indicate an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, often aggravated by stress, improper diet, or weakened Agni. FODMAP foods could be further aggravating this condition, leading to poor digestion and malabsorption. The inability to tolerate vitamins and antibiotics suggests that your gut’s microbiome may be out of balance. In Ayurveda, we would recommend a thorough cleansing process (Panchakarma) to detoxify the body, restore Agni, and re-establish gut health. Colonoscopy or microbiome analysis can provide insights into underlying conditions, but Ayurvedic dietary modifications, herbal support, and lifestyle changes could help address the root cause of these issues holistically.

It sounds like you’ve got quite a lot going on with your digestive system. Since you’re dealing with multiple symptoms like incomplete motions, smelly gas, skin bumps, mouth ulcers, and even loss of appetite, it’s understandable to want to get to the root cause. Before considering things like colonoscopy or gut microbiome analysis, which are more invasive and costly, let’s chat about Ayurvedic perspective.
From an Ayurvedic point of view, your symptoms might be linked to an imbalance in your Vata and Pitta doshas, leading to weak agni (digestive fire) and improper elimination of ama (toxins). First things first, constipation and gas are often due to vitiated Vata. So, keeping Vata in check should be a top priority.
You could start with Trifala, about half a teaspoon with warm water at bedtime. It naturally helps with bowel movements and also enhances digestion without being too harsh. Switch up your diet to include warm, cooked foods that are easier on the digestive system—think of stews, soups, or rice with ghee. Cold and raw foods, often tough on digestion, are best avoided for now. Also, sip on warm water throughout the day; a small sip of ginger tea post meals can help ramp up your agni.
For the skin outbreaks and ulcers, consider adding a pinch of turmeric in your meals. Its anti-inflammatory properties can be calming. Applying a paste of sandalwood or neem directly to the bumps might just soothe them a bit.
Now about those vitamins and antibiotics, they may be disrupting your gut flora. Fermented foods like dosa or idli (if they don’t bloat you) might help replenish good bacteria but go cautiously because your system seems presently touchy.
Getting a colonoscopy or microbiome analysis isn’t off the table—if things persist despite trying these lifestyle changes, consulting a doc would make sense. But for now, balancing your doshas in a practical way might just bring you relief ✨.
