how to use jyotishmati oil in nose - #25623

Sebastian

I am really struggling with this annoying nasal congestion! It's driving me nuts, and I've tried several things but nothing seems to work. A friend mentioned using jyotishmati oil in my nose, and I was curious if anyone here knows how to use jyotishmati oil in nose effectively? I'm a bit lost honestly. I heard it can help clear stuffiness and even has some benefits for headaches, which I definitely have been dealing with lately. I squeezed some of that jyotishmati oil onto my fingers and tried sniffing it but felt kinda silly and unsure if I was doing it right. I'm not sure about the amount, like should I just dab a little or put a few drops? Also, would it help if I mixed it with something else or do I just use it alone? If anyone has tips on how to use jyotishmati oil in nose without feeling like I'm making it worse, I would sooo appreciate that! Thanks a lot!

Using jyotishmati oil for nasal congestion can be beneficial, but it’s important to do so correctly. Jyotishmati oil, known as Celastrus paniculatus in Ayurveda, is traditionally used for its benefits in enhancing cognitive functions, and can, indeed, help alleviate nasal congestion due to its warming, slightly pungent nature. Here’s a bit of guidance about its usage:

To start, it’s crucial to ensure that the oil is suitable for nasal administration, as not every commercially available oil is safe for that. Always choose pure, high-quality jyotishmati oil, preferring those labeled for “nasya” (nasal application) if available.

Now, onto the application: You should use only 2-3 drops per nostril. Do this while lying down with your head tilted back slightly, so the oil can efficiently get into your nasal passages. Using a dropper can facilitate this process, and maintaining this position for a minute or two should suffice to allow the oil to penetrate the nasal passages. It’s typically better not to sniff the oil directly from fingers because this can cause uneven application and less effective results.

If you’re finding the oil too strong or irritating, mixing it with a base oil like sesame or coconut oil might be worth considering. This mild dilution could help lessen any discomfort while retaining the benefits.

It’s worth mentioning that before using any oil in the nose, warming it slightly enhances absorption and comfort. A quick heat-up by rubbing the bottle between your hands helps but make sure it’s lukewarm, not hot.

Incorporating this into a routine, like using it before bed or during morning practices, might help double its efficacy as this is generally considered better when done in a calm moment. Ayurveda suggests using understandings of body type (dosha) and imbalances - predominantly Vata and Kapha - especially if you’re prone to congestion issues. Perhaps adjusting diet and lifestyle could offer more comprehensive relief alongside the oil. Ultimately, consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner could help tailor approaches to your specific constitution and needs. And, if symptoms persist or worsen, considering professional medical advice is wise.
