How to treat several tongue issues? - #26621

Virginia

Namaste 🙏 Since June I noticed several changes on my tongue. It’s wet, I don’t really feel the taste of the food, it has some small dots in the front, the middle has nothing and at the back there are bigger dots and it’s more irritated. Also, there is a small crack at the front. Sometimes it feels like it’s paralysed. I’m vata/pita. I have had iron and vitamin B12 deficiency and very low hemoglobin since last year. Now I’m taking the Ayurvedic medicine called “blossom” and also some iron supplements. However, I haven’t seen any difference. I will appreciate any recommendations and advice! Thank you in advance 🙏

Changes in your tongue can be linked to digestive issues, nutritional deficiencies, and dosha imbalances, especially with your Vata-Pitta constitution. The wetness and sensation of paralysis might relate to Vata imbalance, while irritation and small cracks could point to aggravated Pitta. Addressing these imbalances along with your deficiencies can potentially help see improvement.

First, let’s start with nutrition. Continues taking your iron and B12 supplements, but ensure they aren’t taken with calcium-rich foods, as calcium may reduce absorption. Consider consuming them with a source of vitamin C like amla or citrus fruits, which enhances iron absorption. It’s also good to include iron-rich foods like saag, beetroot, and pomegranates, in your meals.

Your diet should be pacifying for both Vata and Pitta doshas. Favor warm, cooked meals and avoid spicy, oily foods that might aggravate Pitta further. Sip on warm herbal teas, such as ginger or chamomile, which support digestion and calm the mind. Ensure your meals are regular and taken at the same times daily to regulate Vata.

Tongue health can also be enhanced through oral hygiene practices. Start practicing oil pulling with a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil every morning for about 5-10 minutes, spit out the oil after and rinse with warm water. This helps detoxify and strengthen oral tissues.

Practices like pranayama (breathing exercises) can also aid in balancing Vata. Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) could be beneficial for calming and balancing energy.

If there’s no improvement or condition worsens, consider consulting a healthcare professional for further diagnosis or treatment. It’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely, given the ongoing deficiencies in iron and B12.

The symptoms you’re experiencing, like wetness, taste change, and the presence of small dots on the tongue with a crack, suggest an imbalance in both Vata and Pitta doshas, likely exacerbated by your nutritional deficiencies. Here’s how you might address these concerns with Siddha-Ayurvedic principles.

1. Address the deficiencies first: Given your history of iron and vitamin B12 deficiency, continues your current supplements and monitor your blood levels regularly. These deficiencies can directly affect the tongue’s health and the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Ensure your diet is richer in naturally iron and B12-loaded foods like beetroot, dark leafy greens, and animal-based products if you consume them, else focus on lentils, fortified cereals, and nutritional yeast for a vegetarian option.

2. Vata-Pitta Balancing: Consuming a balanced diet that cools Pitta but nourishes Vata is essential. Favor warm, cooked meals with a good balance of spices like cumin and coriander, while avoiding overly spicy, oily, or fried foods that aggravate Pitta. Ghee can also be beneficial for both doshas due to its nurturing (snehana) properties.

3. Herbal Recommendations: Triphala is excellent for promoting general detoxification and may help with tongue issues due to its balancing effect on all three doshas. A half teaspoon at night with warm water can support digestive health.

4. Tongue scraping and oil pulling: Begin each day with jaggery or stainless steel tongue scraper to remove toxins and improve taste sensation. After this, do oil pulling with sesame oil to cool and nourish the tissues, enhancing oral health overall.

5. Hydration and Rest: Ensure proper hydration with boiled and then cooled water, sipping it throughout the day. Adequate sleep and stress reduction practices like Pranayama or gentle yoga can further contribute to dosha balance.

If these measures don’t bring improvement or if your symptoms worsen, consult with a qualified healthcare provider. Further diagnostics might be necessary to rule out other underlying conditions. It’s imperative to align any Ayurvedic measures with ongoing medical treatments for your deficiencies.
