Heavy menstrual bleeding, medically known as menorrhagia, can be distressing, especially when it starts unexpectedly or is more pronounced than usual. In Ayurveda, such conditions are often tied to an imbalance in doshas, particularly an excess of Pitta dosha, which can lead to issues like heavy bleeding due to its hot and sharp qualities.

To begin addressing this, it’s essential to focus on restoring balance to the Pitta dosha. Start with your diet – prioritize cooling foods, like cucumber, watermelon, and coconut water that naturally help temper Pitta. Avoiding spicy, salty, and sour foods, all of which can exacerbate Pitta, is key. Integrating herbs like Shatavari and Ashoka may also be beneficial. Shatavari can help nourish and balance female hormones, while Ashoka is traditionally used in Ayurveda to address heavy bleeding and support uterine health.

Consider your lifestyle too. Regular relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation can reduce stress, which can aggravate Pitta. Practicing gentle yoga can invigorate your body without overstimulating it – focus on poses that promote pelvic relaxation, like Supta Baddha Konasana.

Internally, digestion plays a huge role in overall health. Pay attention to your agni, or digestive fire. Avoid heavy, oily foods which may dampen your digestive fire. Warm, lighter meals with warming herbs like cumin and coriander can maintain a healthy digestion without overloading it.

In terms of herbs, try a decoction of herbs like Lodhra, which is known for its astringent properties and can help manage bleeding. Prepare a simple tea by boiling the herb in water and consume twice daily.

If the heavy bleeding persists or if you notice any other troubling signs, you should consult a healthcare professional. Sometimes, heavier bleeding can signal other underlying health issues. It’s always best to approach your health with a combination of traditional wisdom and modern medical knowledge. Remember, consistency in implementing these lifestyle and dietary changes can help restore balance over time, but make sure to consult with a qualified practitioner for personalized advice.
