Lichen planus is a condition that can cause discomfort and inflammation, particularly in the mouth, and is often linked to an imbalance in the body’s immune system. In Ayurveda, it is considered to be a result of aggravated Pitta dosha, leading to inflammation and skin disturbances. To manage this, it’s important to focus on cooling and soothing treatments for the body. You can try herbal remedies such as Aloe vera, which has cooling properties, or turmeric and neem, which can help reduce inflammation. Additionally, practicing stress management techniques like meditation can also help balance the immune system. A diet that avoids spicy, acidic, and hot foods is recommended, while including cooling and anti-inflammatory foods like coconut, cucumber, and dairy in moderation. You may also benefit from Ayurvedic mouthwashes made with herbs like licorice or triphala to soothe irritation in the mouth. It’s important to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized treatment plan.

Sounds pretty uncomfortable, what you’re describing sounds like something called “lichenoid” reactions or lichen planus, a condition where the immune system attacks mucous membranes in the mouth. The white lines could be called Wickham’s striae, kind of signature for that condition. But, ok, let’s talk about how Ayurveda might look at this.

Firstly, the burning sensation and these lesions, kinda points towards a Pitta imbalance, as Pitta is heat and transformation and when out of whack, can lead to inflammation. Mouth ulcers or lesions are often considered a sign of high Pitta. The aim would be to cool things down, literally speaking.

You could start by reducing Pitta-aggravating foods like spicy, salty, or acidic things. Instead, go for more cooling foods - cucumber, melons, coconut water. Even ghee is great because it’s cooling for Pitta and soothing for tissues. Another thing, pay attention to when this happens most. Is it stress-related? Stress can spike Pitta too, so practicing some cooling pranayama like Sheetali or Sheetkari can help.

There’s also Triphala, a classical herbal blend, usually three fruits, it balances all doshas but specifically helps with detox and is cooling. You can even rinse your mouth with Triphala water - steep a half teaspoon in warm water overnight and use it for rinsing your mouth the morning after. Gargling sesame oil before bed may help as it moisturizes and soothes inflamed tissue.

But, here’s a big caveat: if the pain or lesions worsen, or if they don’t improve, it might be time to see a dentist or doctor immediately. While Ayurveda’s great for chronic health balancing, it’s important to rule out anything serious first. So, keep an eye on it and make sure to follow-up with a healthcare professional for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. Take care!
