Doctors' responses
No, every fall does NOT necessarily cause a concussion. Many children fall while playing or riding a bicycle and recover without any brain injury. However, if the child hits the head and shows certain symptoms, we should watch carefully. What is a Concussion? A concussion is a mild injury to the brain caused by a blow or sudden movement of the head. It temporarily affects brain function. When a Fall Usually Does NOT Cause Concussion If the child: Fell but did not hit the head strongly Got up quickly Is talking normally Has no vomiting Is playing normally afterward Then it is unlikely to be a concussion. Signs That Suggest Possible Concussion Watch for these symptoms within 24–48 hours: Dizziness Confusion or difficulty answering questions Headache Vomiting Sleepiness Blurred vision Balance problems Sensitivity to light or noise If dizziness or confusion appeared after the fall, it is better to observe the child closely. Danger Signs (Need Immediate Doctor Visit) Go to a doctor or emergency if there is: Repeated vomiting Loss of consciousness Severe or worsening headache Seizure Unequal pupils Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking Weakness in arms or legs What To Do After a Fall Let the child rest for a few hours. Avoid mobile games, TV, or heavy activity for the day. Give light food and fluids. Observe for 24 hours for any new symptoms.
