White coating on a baby’s tongue at this age is commonly due to milk deposits or sometimes mild oral thrush. Since your baby is feeding normally and only occasionally fussy, it is usually not a serious concern, but it should be handled gently. Avoid forcefully cleaning the tongue, as it can cause irritation. Use a soft, clean cloth dipped in lukewarm water and gently wipe once daily, without trying to scrape it off completely. It is better to avoid giving sweet flag (Acorus calamus) in such a young baby, as it may not be safe without proper medical supervision. Ensure proper hygiene by cleaning feeding utensils and, if breastfeeding, maintaining nipple hygiene as well. After feeding, you can give a few drops of lukewarm water (if advised by your pediatrician) to help reduce coating. If the white coating looks thick like curd, spreads to cheeks or lips, or baby becomes more fussy during feeding, it may indicate fungal infection and should be shown to a doctor. No internal medicines are required at this stage unless examined.
