Ayurvedic approach for hypothyroidism (TSH level above 10) for a female 24Y - #21695
RIFATH ANJUM
Obese and weighing 90kgs and above since the last 10 years. Hair thinning, face swelling, are amongst the worst of the symptoms other than not able to lose weight. I got diagnosed 4 months back and on a supplement for the elevated levels. But I feel there should be a natural approach via diet and lifestyle change or something ayurvedic finding in this regard. Please help me with this.

Here’s a comprehensive natural + Ayurvedic plan to support weight loss, hormonal balance, and reduce symptoms:
---
1. Ayurvedic Understanding
From an Ayurvedic perspective, this pattern suggests an imbalance in Kapha and Meda dhatu (fat metabolism), possibly with Ama (toxins) accumulation and sluggish Agni (digestion/metabolism).
Diet Plan-
Morning -Lukewarm water with 1 tsp of Triphala powder or 10 soaked fenugreek seeds.
OR Juice of 1/2 lemon + pinch of black pepper + pinch of dry ginger in warm water.
Diet should consist- High-protein & low-carb diet, millet, red rice,Roasted chana or foxnuts (makhana) or green tea with cinnamon.
Herbal tea like cinnamon or ginger tea (avoid dairy tea).
Amla juice or soaked almonds (4–5), or a fruit like apple/papaya.
Add buttermilk with roasted cumin if digestion is sluggish.
Dinner (7–8 pm):Soups, sautéed veggies, or millet dosa with chutney. Keep dinner light and avoid wheat, rice, and sugar.
Avoid: Dairy, sugar, fried food, wheat, white rice, maida, processed snacks, and cold drinks.
Lifestyle Recommendations
Sleep: Go to bed by 10 pm. Deep sleep helps hormonal reset.
Movement: 30–45 min brisk walk or yoga daily. Kapalbhati, Surya Namaskar, and Ustrasana help metabolism.

Indeed, hypothyroidism with a TSH level above 10 indicates a sluggish thyroid function, contributing to symptoms like weight gain, hair thinning, and swelling. Ayurveda focuses on the root cause, balancing the doshas, notably Kapha and Vata, often aggravated in such conditions. Addressing Agni (digestive fire) is essential.
Begin with your diet. Favor easily digestible, warm, and light foods. Include grains such as barley and quinoa; they help manage Kapha. Vegetables like carrots, beets, and spinach provide essential nutrients. Avoid raw foods, heavy dairy, icy drinks, and processed sugar – these weigh down the Agni. Introduce spices such as turmeric, ginger, and black pepper to kindle digestive fire. Reduce goitrogenic foods like soy; they interfere with thyroid function.
Consider daily abhyanga (warm oil massage) using sesame oil. It enhances circulation, which is sluggish in hypothyroidism, and aids relaxation. Follow with a warm shower to soothe Vata. Aim for regular Panchakarma therapy or cleansing treatments under guidance as it detoxifies and balances doshas.
Yoga, with a focus on stimulating poses like matsyasana (fish pose) and sarvangasana (shoulder stand), can support thyroid function. Practice Pranayama daily, specifically Ujjayi breath, to improve metabolism.
Remember, consistency is key with lifestyle changes. Incorporate moderate exercises such as brisk walking to support weight management. Stress reduction is vital; engage in activities that promote mental peace, perhaps meditation or gardening.
It's important to keep monitoring your thyroid levels with your doctor while integrating these changes. Some Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha may be beneficial. It is wise to consult your practitioner for personalized herbal recommendations.
This holistic approach ensures that you're supporting not just your thyroid but overall well-being, harmonizing body and mind. Give time for changes to take effect; the body needs a period of healing and adjustment.
