how many figs to eat per day - #23889

Ava

I am super confused about how many figs to eat per day. A week ago, I found out my blood sugar levels were kinda high, and my doc suggested adding more fiber to my diet. I’ve read that figs are great for that, but I honestly can't figure out how many figs to eat per day! Like I went to the store and bought a bunch, and now they’re just sitting there looking at me. I tried eating two figs at breakfast yesterday and felt kinda bloated after. Maybe I overdid it? Is there a good amount I should stick to, like 3 or 4 a day or something? I heard people say that figs help with digestion, but also that too many could have the opposite effect? It’s all so confusing! I really wanna make sure I’m gettin the benefits without overdoing it. What do you guys think? How many figs to eat per day is safe, and will help with my gut health without making me feel all weird? Thanks!

Doctors’ responses

When it comes to incorporating figs into your diet, especially with high blood sugar, it’s good to tread carefully. Figs are indeed a good source of fiber, but they also contain natural sugars, which can somewhat affect your blood sugar levels. So, it's important to find a balance that provides you with the benefits without tipping over to the adverse side. Starting with one to two fresh figs a day is usually a safe and effective amount. If you’re feeling bloated with two, it may be a signal from your body to ease off a bit. Pay attention to how your body feels. If your digestive system adapts well, you might gradually introduce up to three — just don’t rush it. Remember, moderation is key. Figs can definitely aid in digestion due to their fiber content helping regulate bowel movements. But, overconsumption might cause bloating or discomfort as you’ve experienced. Try having them at different times of the day. You might prefer in the morning with breakfast or even as a snack. It's important to complement the fiber intake from figs with sufficient water intake. This helps in mitigating any unpleasant digestive issues like bloating. Also, combining figs with other low-glycemic foods can help balance blood sugar levels, like having them with a handful of nuts. If you notice any persistent stomach discomfort or if symptoms worsen, it might be worth consulting with your health care provider for an individualized recommendation. Everyone’s digestive system is unique, hence adjustments might be needed. Meanwhile, engage in regular physical activity as it helps in managing blood sugar levels too, along with a balanced diet. Make sure the rest of your meals are rich in vegetables, lean proteins, and good fats to maintain a steady level of energy throughout the day. Just be patient with your body, and observe how it’s responding as you make these dietary changes.
