what happens if we eat curd at night - #24383

Sophia

I am really confused about the whole thing with curd—I love it, especially with dinner, but I keep hearing different stuff about what happens if we eat curd at night! Like, last week, I had a huge bowl of it with my curry meal, and then my stomach just felt kinda funny, but maybe that was just something else? A friend of mine says curd can mess with sleep or digestion if eaten late. I mean, I usually never have issues, but this time I couldn’t sleep well, and now I’m overthinking. Did I do something wrong? What happens if we eat curd at night? Is this really a big deal or just something people say? I mean, I’ve read it can be good for gut health too, and I don’t have a problem with dairy usually. But I don’t want to make things worse if there’s negative stuff happening. Any thoughts or insights would really help! Thanks!

Eating curd at night, there's a bit of complexity to it, as Ayurveda looks closely at individual factors like your dosha, the season, and your digestive strength or agni. In Ayurveda, curd is regarded as heavy and can sometimes aggravate kapha and pitta if consumed at inappropriate times or in large amounts. Because nighttime digestion tends to be slower for many people, having curd might indeed lead to discomfort or disturb your sleep, especially since it can increase mucus production. When curd is eaten at night, it may not adequately digest and lead to indigestion, bloating, or that funny feeling in your stomach you experienced. It can actually increase the chances of congestion and sluggish digestion, especially if taken with a heavy meal. That's possibly why you had trouble sleeping. But the effects can indeed vary from person to person. Curd can be beneficial for gut health due to its probiotics, but it might be better enjoyed in moderation during the day or early evening. If you usually like to end your day with a bit of dairy, you might consider alternatives. For instance, having buttermilk (chaas) with a pinch of ginger or cumin during dinner can be lighter on the stomach. It's generally better for balancing digestion at night and won't weigh down your system as much. Seasonal factors can be curious too, during colder months, heavier foods may seem more troublesome than in warmer seasons. Try observing how you feel after you consume certain things at night, and remember, small adjustments can make a big difference. If your overall diet is balanced and mindful, occasional indulgence in curd won't be catastrophic. But if discomfort arises, it’s always wise to listen to your body and adjust accordingly. Stick to routine, and suit your meal timings with how your system naturally feels comfortable for the best results.
