is curd good for sore throat - #25101
I am dealing with this really annoying sore throat for a few days now. It's been tough because it hurts to swallow, and I can't even enjoy my coffee in the morning! I've heard different opinions about foods that might help, and a friend mentioned that curd could be soothing. Now, I’m curious, is curd good for sore throat? Like, I've tried warm saline gargles and honey, but they only give me temporary relief. I bought some plain curd hoping it might coat my throat a bit or something, but I'm worried it might irritate it more instead. Has anyone here had experiences with curd when they had a sore throat? Did it actually help? I know dairy can sometimes create mucus, but I'm not sure if that's the case with curd?? I just want to kick this sore throat to the curb, especially since my kids are full of energy and I can't keep up with them like this! Would love to hear your thoughts if curd is good for sore throat in any way! Thanks!

Doctors’ responses
Curd can indeed be a soothing choice for a sore throat, but it really depends on your individual body type and the specifics of your sore throat. According to Ayurveda, curd is typically considered to have cold and heavy properties, which means it might not be suitable for everyone. If your sore throat is accompanied by a cold or mucus production, curd might aggravate rather than alleviate your symptoms.
In Ayurveda, we evaluate conditions based on doshas, and an imbalance in Kapha or Vata could be behind your sore throat. If you’re experiencing a heavy, mucus-laden sore throat, it’s usually best to avoid curd, as it could potentially contribute to congestion or mucus. On the other hand, if your sore throat feels dry, as if there’s a scratchiness or a need for moisture, the soothing properties of curd may actually provide some relief.
Here’s what you could try with curd: Make sure it’s fresh and not sour, as the sourness can irritate the throat more. You might want to try mixing it with a pinch of turmeric, which adds anti-inflammatory benefits to help soothe the irritation. Consider having it at room temperature, cold curd might be too irritating if your throat is sensitive.
Also, it’s worth noting that curd is more likely to be problematic when consumed in larger amounts or very cold, so moderation is key.
However, it’s crucial to remember that if your sore throat is persistent, especially with symptoms like fever, or difficulty breathing, you should definitely seek professional medical guidance. Meanwhile, you could continue soothing remedies like warm saline gargles and herbal teas with ginger or licorice, which does not generally increase mucus.
In summary, curd can be beneficial for certain types of sore throat but be mindful of how your body responds. If you notice increased mucus or discomfort, consider pivoting to warm, herbal alternatives that have been traditionally supportive in Ayurveda.
