Dear Irene,

I’m an ophthalmologist. Kindly visit your nearest eye hospital undergo complete eye examination and get your intraocular pressure, visual acuity and checked. Only after these examinations can we plan the correct treatment for your condition.

Since you have redness, grainy sensation, blurred vision, and temple headache — and you are already using Lumigan and Alphagan‑P — it is important to ensure your eye pressure is well‑controlled and there are no other associated causes like inflammation or corneal dryness.

In the meantime, you may:

1.Avoid eye rubbing. 2.Take adequate rest and avoid prolonged screen exposure. 3.Use preservative‑free lubricating eye drops if dryness is present. 4.Protect eyes from wind, dust, and direct sunlight.

Please seek in‑person evaluation urgently to avoid any risk to your vision.

With kind regards, Dr.Sumi.S

Elevated eye pressure, redness, grainy sensation, blurry vision, and headaches can indeed be indicative of glaucoma, a condition that needs careful management, usually guided by an ophthalmologist. You’re already using medications like Lumigan and Alphagan purite, which are prescribed to help reduce intraocular pressure. It’s important to adhere to your doctor’s advice and routine check-ups to monitor the condition closely.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, eye health can be supported by understanding the balance of doshas, particularly Pitta, which governs vision. Excessive heat or imblance in Pitta can aggravate eye issues. To complement your current treatment, consider these Ayurvedic recommendations:

1. Dietary Adjustments: Embrace Pitta-pacifying foods. Include cooling foods like cucumbers, cilantro, and coconut water into your diet. Reduce spicy, sour, and salty foods that could elevate Pitta and worsen symptoms.

2. Triphala for Eye Health: Triphala can be beneficial due to its cleansing and balancing properties. You might opt to use Triphala eye wash—mix 1/4 tsp Triphala powder in a glass of water, strain it thoroughly, and then use it as an eyewash after cooling. Ensure all particles are removed before using an eye cup.

3. Adequate Rest: Ensure you get enough sleep and rest your eyes regularly throughout the day to prevent strain. This also helps manage Pitta.

4. Netra Tarpana: If feasible, consult an Ayurvedic specialist about Netra Tarpana, an eye treatment where medicated ghee is poured over the eyes to nourish and protect them.

5. Ghee Consumption: Small amounts of pure ghee in your diet can help. It’s considered cooling and can support eye tissue health by balancing Pitta.

6. Calm Mind: Stress management is crucial. Practices like yoga, especially asanas such as Shavasana or focused breathing, can help alleviate headaches and reduce stress.

These suggestions should integrate smoothly with your current medication. However, always consult your doctor before incorporating any new regimen, particularly with a condition like glaucoma, where regular medical oversight is essential. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, seek medical advice immediately.

To address eye pressure that may be high and causing discomfort such as redness, grittiness, blurred vision, and accompanying headache, it is crucial to follow the prescribed regimen given by your eye specialist with medications like Lumigan and Alphagan Purite. These drugs aim to reduce intraocular pressure and should not be interrupted unless directed by your doctor. However, you can complement these treatments with some aspects of the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, keeping safety in mind.

Consider adding gentle eye exercises that can help relax tension around the eyes. Rolling the eyes gently clockwise and counterclockwise for a few minutes daily can promote circulation. Regular blinking every 4-5 seconds when engaging in screen time may also alleviate strain.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, this condition could involve an imbalance of Pitta dosha, which often manifests through inflammation and irritation like redness of eyes. Cooling practices might benefit you, such as consuming fresh Amla juice daily, known for its pitta-pacifying properties. You might also include herbs like Triphala, which can be consumed as a daily tonic. A teaspoon of Triphala powder in warm water before bedtime may help reduce inflammation and benefit vision health.

Cooling eye padding with cucumber slices, or rose water-soaked pads can provide immediate relief and soothe the eyes. It’s best to do this when relaxing or before sleep.

Remember, though, while these practices can support your well-being, they should accompany the primary medical treatments. High intraocular pressure can sometimes lead to serious conditions like glaucoma, so maintaining routine follow-ups with your ophthalmologist is essential to protect overall eye health.
