can i drink beetroot juice daily - #36329

Riley

I am really confused right now about this whole beetroot juice thing. I've been hearing so much about how healthy it is, like everyone says, “oh you should drink beetroot juice daily!” But like, can I drink beetroot juice daily? It started when I read this article saying it's great for boosting energy and lowering blood pressure, which I really need, because I tend to have low energy — especially around 3 PM. I’ve tried a few different juices, and honestly, the beetroot one is kinda weird but I don't mind it. My mom had high blood pressure and I keep getting these occasional headaches that kinda make me worried, but I’m not sure if it’s related. And like, I've been doing some research (I want to be smart about this!) and some people say I shouldn’t drink it every day— others swear by it. I bought this big bottle of organic beetroot juice just yesterday, but I'm slightly afraid to overdo it. Maybe I'm just paranoid? How much is too much? Also, can I mix it with other juices? I made a carrot-beetroot mix before and it was okay but quite sweet... My friend says that's bad for blood sugar, tho. Can I drink beetroot juice daily, or do I need to, like, back off a bit? Appreciate any advice!

Doctors' responses

Drinking beetroot juice daily can indeed offer health benefits but it should be approached with a balanced perspective. As per Ayurveda, beetroot is known to be cooling (sheetal) and grounding, often pacifying Vata and Pitta doshas due to its naturally sweet and slightly astringent taste. However, moderation is key. A standard recommendation would be around 100-150 ml of beetroot juice daily, which can be safely consumed without adverse effects for most people. If you’re new to beetroot juice, start with even smaller amounts, like 50 ml, to see how your body responds.

The energy boost you feel from consuming beetroot juice is associated with its high nitrate content, which helps improve blood circulation and oxygen delivery. However, because you’ve mentioned occasional headaches and a family history of high blood pressure, it’s wise to monitor your body’s response closely. If there are any adverse effects, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out other underlying issues.

You can definitely mix beetroot juice with other juices to balance the sweetness and caloric content, especially if you’re concerned about blood sugar levels. Carrot-beetroot is a good mix, with carrots adding beta-carotene while also supporting the body with antioxidants. However, it’s important to mind the total sugar content, especially for those monitoring their blood sugar levels. Pair beetroot juice with more neutral-tasting vegetables like cucumber or kale if the sweetness is an issue, or consider adding a splash of lemon juice to cut through it.

Beetroot juice can also be more effective on an empty stomach early in the day, which helps to harness its natural detoxifying effects. But be sure to listen to your body and adjust based on any discomfort or digestive irregularities. If you’re interested in exploring other alternatives, occasionally switching to alternatives like amla or pomegranate juice can provide variety, aligning well with Ayurvedic principles while maintaining balanced blood pressure and boosting energy levels.

Yes, you can drink beetroot juice daily, but it’s important to do so in moderation, particularly tailored to your body’s specific constitution. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic framework, beetroot is known to balance the pitta and vata doshas due to its inherent cooling nature and grounding quality. This might speak to your situation if you struggle with low energy and are concerned about blood pressure, as it can both rejuvenate and help regulate circulation.

However, consuming too much beetroot juice can sometimes lead to an imbalance in those with high kapha predominant constitution. It can also increase the sugar levels when consumed in large quantities, so moderation is key. Try starting with about 100 to 150 ml a day. Monitor how your body responds over the course of a few weeks. Integrating this with part of a balanced diet, ensure that other foods you’re consuming are supporting healthy agni (digestive fire).

Mixing beetroot juice with carrot juice is generally a good practice and harmonizes sweet earthiness with other balancing qualities. If blood sugar management is a concern, try incorporating a bit of ginger or lime juice to cut the sweetness and aid digestion.

Keep an eye on your headaches. If they persist or worsen, a more in-depth analysis might be necessary, as headaches can indicate various imbalances. Drink beetroot juice in the morning or early afternoon, as it energizes, without stimulating too much before sleep. If symptoms of concern continue or arise, it might be wise to consult with a healthcare provider or an Ayurvedic practitioner specialized in such conditions to ensure your path towards wellbeing is clear and safe.
