Managing eczema, especially in young children, can indeed be challenging. Given the symptoms you describe, it sounds like your son may be experiencing a combination of dosha imbalances, potentially aggravated by dietary and environmental triggers. In Ayurveda, eczema is often linked to imbalances in the Pitta and Kapha doshas, along with impaired agni (digestive fire) and accumulation of ama (toxins).
First, focus on diet. Since you’re noticing that sugar and certain breads trigger flare-ups, consider reducing his intake of refined sugars and foods containing high levels of preservatives or artificial additives. Opt for naturally sweetened fruits in moderation and home-cooked meals using whole, unprocessed ingredients. Incorporate cooling foods like cucumber, melons, and coconut water to pacify Pitta.
Introduce herbs such as Neem and Turmeric which are renowned for their anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. A small pinch of turmeric powder can be mixed into warm almond milk or water, taken once a day. However, due consideration should be given to quantity, and it’s advised to consult a local Ayurvedic practitioner before regular use.
Ensure his digestion is supported by giving him a warm, easy-to-digest diet. Oatmeal, rice, lentils, and soft fruits like bananas and applesauce can be gentle on his stomach and help manage both eczema and his susceptibility to colds.
For bathing, avoid very hot water and consider adding a few tablespoons of oatmeal to soothe the skin. Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing, and apply a natural oil, like coconut or sesame oil, immediately afterwards to retain moisture.
Consider the use of Ayurvedic oils such as Kumkumadi oil or Neem oil as topicals; however, do a patch test first to ensure there’s no allergic reaction.
Regarding any history of heavy medication like antibiotics, this could indicate a vitiated microbiome. Probiotics may help restore balance, but consult with a healthcare provider to choose suitable strains for your son.
If worms infestations persist, consider Ayurvedic deworming herbs under supervision of a Ayurvedic practitioner, as regular use of albendazole may affect gut flora.
Avoid synthetic fragrances in fabric softeners, detergents, and personal care products, as they might aggravate eczema. Opt for natural, fragrance-free products. Regularly wash his bedding and clothing in hot water to remove allergens and irritants.
Ensure he is getting enough rest, as sleep is critical in healing and immune support. Maintain a consistent bedtime routine and create a calm, cool environment to reduce Pitta aggravation during sleep.
Since you are in the UK, occasionally exposure to sunlight, when possible, can help with Vitamin D synthesis, important for skin health. Always balance gentle sun exposure with risk of burning.
Consulting an Ayurvedic physician in your area or online would be advisable to continually refine treatment according to his constitution and changing needs.
