is honey good for psoriasis - #40229

I am really struggling with this psoriasis issue I’ve had for a while now, and honestly, it's been quite frustrating. My skin gets so itchy and flaky, especially on my elbows and knees. I just came across the idea that maybe is honey good for psoriasis? I’ve heard that honey has some healing properties, and I know it can be soothing on minor cuts and burns. I also read somewhere that it has anti-inflammatory abilities, but not sure if that actually helps with skin issues like psoriasis?? Last week, I tried applying some raw honey directly to my patches after reading a few posts on how people found relief. Like, it felt nice but didn't seem to change much, or maybe I wasn’t patient enough? I dunno. I also applied it before bed and woke up feeling pretty sticky, haha. Not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to be. I just feel stuck and searching for something that can help ease the discomfort. Is honey good for psoriasis really? Or should I consider other natural treatments? Any tips or personal experiences would be super helpful! Thank u!

Honey, particularly raw honey, has been can be soothing and may offer some benefits for psoriasis, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, while honey can provide some temporary relief by hydrating the skin and reducing irritation, it may not address the root cause of the psoriasis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, which means it’s necessary to look beyond surface-level treatments and consider internal factors, following Ayurvedic solutions suited to you’re individual dosha and lifestyle.

In Ayurveda, psoriasis is often related to imbalances in the vata and kapha doshas. Internal cleansing and balancing these doshas through diet and lifestyle changes could offer more sustainable relief compared to topical treatments alone. Here are some suggestions you might find helpful:

1. Dietary Approach: Focus on a kapha and vata-pacifying diet. Add warm, cooked meals with plenty of spices like turmeric, ginger, and black pepper, which may help balance these doshas. Avoid cold, heavy, or oily foods, as well as processed and fatty foods that can increase kapha.

2. Hydration and Moisturization: Besides honey, try coconut oil or sesame oil. Massage these oils gently into affected areas, which can help soothe and hydrate dry, flaky skin.

3. Stress Management: Stress is a significant trigger for psoriasis flare-ups. Incorporate yoga, meditation, or pranayama (breathing exercises) into your daily routine.

4. Herbal Support: Consider integrating herbs known to support the skin-like neem, turmeric, and manjistha. These can be used in oral form (as advised by a practitioner) or applied topically with caution.

5. Seek Professional Guidance: Consulting an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner would be beneficial. They can evaluate your prakriti (constitution), and guide a personalized treatment protocol, possibly involving panchakarma therapies or custom herbal formulations.

Always patch test any new topical treatment, like honey, to ensure there’s no allergic reaction. Persistence and patience, alongside an appropriate holistic strategy, can often lead to more substantial improvements over time.

Honey can indeed have some beneficial effects for psoriasis due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. In Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, honey is seen as balancing for the kapha dosha when used externally and is often praised for its ability to promote healing and moisturize the skin. When applying honey directly to the skin, as you did, it might be best used as part of a more comprehensive approach to manage psoriasis rather than a standalone treatment.

For psoriasis, it’s crucial to address underlying imbalances in the doshas. This condition often involves an imbalance of the pitta dosha, which governs skin’s health and can lead to inflammation when aggravated. What you may want to do is incorporate honey into a routine with other naturally soothing treatments; Turmeric, for instance, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can be combined with honey to create a paste. You can apply this mixture to the affected patches, leaving it on for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing gently with lukewarm water.

Additionally, ensure that your diet and lifestyle are aligned with calming pitta. Favor cooling, non-spicy foods, and minimize stress through yoga or meditation as stress greatly impacts psoriasis. Consider consulting with a qualified Siddha-Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized guidance.

While honey might provide some relief, remember it’s important to remain patient and consistent with natural remedies. If you find your symptoms worsening or impacting your quality of life significantly, it’s always wise to consult a qualified healthcare provider to explore all possible treatment options.
