can ashwagandha cause tinnitus - #41030

Avery

I am really concerned about something that's been happening to me. I started taking ashwagandha a few weeks ago hoping it would help with my stress and anxiety levels, because honestly, life’s been pretty chaotic lately, you know? Work has been crazy, and I've been feeling really on edge. Anyway, I noticed that along with my calmer mind, I’ve now started hearing this ringing in my ears like a constant background noise. Tinnitus, I think they call it? The weird part is, I read somewhere that ashwagandha can actually cause tinnitus in some cases, which totally freaked me out! I mean, I thought it was supposed to relax me, not leave me with this annoying buzz. Has anyone else experienced this or heard that ashwagandha could be the culprit for the tinnitus? I really don’t want to give up on something that seems to help with my stress, but this loud ringing is driving me nuts! Oh, and I tried cutting back on the dosage, but the tinnitus hasn’t gone away. It’s like I’m stuck in this weird loop where I’m potentially treating one thing but then causing another issue. Any advice or thoughts on if ashwagandha can cause tinnitus or if I should look at other reasons for this annoying noise would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Ashwagandha, revered in Ayurvedic medicine, is primarily known for its adaptogenic properties, helping balance stress and anxiety. While there aren’t many reports or scientific evidences directly linking Ashwagandha to tinnitus, individual responses to herbs can be quite varied due to the unique body constitution, or prakriti, in Ayurveda, and the current state of dosha balance. Your experience could be part of a rare set of responses, possibly related to how your body metabolizes the herb or due to an underlying imbalance in vata dosha, which is known to effect nervous and auditory systems.

Firstly, it’s important to assess your overall lifestyle and diet, as these could contribute to vata imbalances, potentially exacerbating symptoms like tinnitus. Excessive stress, erratic schedules, late nights, dry, or cold foods might increase vata, creating an environment where symptoms like ringing in the ears can thrive. Consider incorporating grounding foods, like warm soups and stews, cooked grains, and root vegetables. Regular oil massages (abhyanga) using sesame oil can be highly beneficial in balancing vata.

While your experience with Ashwagandha is not common, reducing the dosage or trying a different form (e.g., a different blend or from another reliable brand) might present a different outcome… Alternatively, consider switching to another adaptogen, like Brahmi or Shankhapushpi, which are also known for their calming properties without typically affecting the ear pathways.

Accompanied by this, maintaining routine relaxation practices like yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breath control) helps pacify vata and improves stress resilience. If tinnitus persists despite lifestyle adjustments and altering your ashwagandha consumption, consulting with a healthcare professional to explore other potential causes is advisable, considering issues like hearing loss, ear infections, or prolonged exposure to loud sounds. If symptoms are distressing or worsening, seeking an holistic Ayurvedic consultation or an ENT specialist advice can further guide a safe and effective approach to address this concern.
