Doctors' responses

For the chronic cough and breath difficulties you’re facing, lasting over a month, immediate attention is required especially since you’re currently on allopathic treatment. Steroids and inhalers are often prescribed for conditions like asthma or severe respiratory infections, so it’s vital to follow your doctor’s guidance closely. However, Ayurveda can offer complementary support to help balance your system.

First, assess your dosha and if it’s relevant, focus on pacifying Kapha, as it’s often involved in persitent cough and respiratory congestion. Diet plays a crucial role here. Reduce or eliminate dairy, cold foods, and oily or fried foods, as they can increase mucus production, A warm and light diet is preferred, with easily digestible foods like warm soups, kichadi, and herbal teas. Ginger tea with a pinch of turmeric and honey consumed two to three times a day may help.

Breathing exercises such as Pranayama can help facilitate lung function. Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) practiced for 5-10 minutes daily can be especially beneficial. It aids in balancing Vata and Kapha, and supports lung capacity.

In addition, apply a warm pad on your chest to relieve congestion.

For an herbal remedy, you might consider Pippali, well-known for enhancing the respiratory system - take it under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, as it’s also potent and needs careful dosing. Tulsi and Licorice root are other herbs aiding in reducing cough. A decoction or tea made from these leaves could be sipped throughout the day.

Maintaining a routine with oil massage (Abhyanga) can strengthen the immune system and balance doshas. Warm sesame oil is suitable, particularly given the time of year—apply before bathing at least weekly.

Given the ongoing nature of your symptoms and current medication, please continue working closely with your healthcare provider. Comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare provider ensures optimal treatment and safety, particularly in cases of respiratory issues which might need quick and targeted medical intervention.

Persistent cough and breathing issues can be quite discomforting, particularly when they linger. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, it’s important to consider the underlying imbalances that might be causing these symptoms. Typically, chronic respiratory issues like this involve an imbalance of kapha dosha, possibly aggravated by vata dosha.

Firstly, diet plays a critical role in managing dosha imbalances. It’s advisable to avoid cold, heavy, and oily foods, as they can exacerbate kapha dosha. Instead, opt for warm, light, and easily digestible foods. Include more spices like ginger, black pepper, and turmeric in your daily meals, as they help to balance kapha and enhance agni—your digestive fire.

To clear the respiratory channels, steam inhalation can be beneficial. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to hot water and inhale the steam for about 10–15 minutes once or twice a day. Additionally, practicing pranayama, like kapalbhati or anulom vilom, may help improve breathing and clear congestion. However, only do these breathing exercises if you’re comfortable and not feeling strained.

Herbal formulations such as Sitopaladi Churna or Talisadi Churna can be taken with honey to alleviate cough. Nonetheless, given you’re already on allopathic steroids and inhalers, it’s crucial not to introduce Ayurvedic treatments without consulting a healthcare professional who understands both systems.

Should your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s imperative to follow up with your doctor to rule out any serious underlying conditions. This approach lets you address your health concerns safely while considering a holistic healing path.
