Jack
I have very intense pain in my thoracic and lumbar spine. Sometimes, when I’m lying on my side and try to get up, I experience sharp shooting pain in my lower back. However, there’s no acute pain, only when I move. What should I do? Please help. It’s very, very painful.

Doctors’ responses
Intense pain in the thoracic and lumbar spine, especially sharp or shooting pain during movement, suggests an imbalance that could be rooted in Vata dosha, which governs movement and nerve impulses in the body. This type of pain often indicates that Vata has accumulated in the joints and muscles, causing stiffness, pain, and restricted movement. In Ayurveda, treatments focus on pacifying Vata and relieving musculoskeletal tension through herbal therapies, gentle exercises, and lifestyle modifications.
First, consider applying warm herbal oils like Mahanarayan Taila or Dhanvantaram Taila to the affected areas. These oils, known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, help improve circulation and alleviate stiffness. Gently massaging the oils and following with a warm compress can further soothe the pain. Ayurvedic therapies like Kati Basti (a warm oil therapy specifically for the lower back) or Pizhichil (a warm oil pouring treatment) may also be very beneficial for pain management and healing.
Internally, herbs such as Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Shallaki (Boswellia serrata), and Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) are often recommended to reduce inflammation, strengthen the spine, and support healthy joint function. Following a Vata-pacifying diet—warm, nourishing, and easy-to-digest foods with good fats like ghee and oils—can provide essential lubrication to the joints. Additionally, avoid cold foods, heavy lifting, or strenuous activity, which can aggravate the condition.
Gentle stretches and yoga, particularly poses like Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Marjariasana (Cat-Cow Stretch), can help relieve spinal tension and improve flexibility. Regular practice, alongside these treatments, can gradually alleviate your pain. Please

Intense pain in the thoracic and lumbar spine, particularly during movement, is commonly due to issues such as muscle strain, ligament sprain, or possible disc-related problems. Ideal to get an MRI urgently. Avoid movements that trigger the sharp, shooting pain, especially twisting or sudden motions that strain the lower back. However, try not to remain inactive for too long, as this can weaken supportive muscles. You can take Tab Yogaraj guggul 2-2-2 after food for 3 days & apply Antarth or any other liniment to reduce the pain. Avoid gassy foods. Drink hot water with meals especially boiled with dry ginger to reduce inflammation.

Oof, lower back pain can be a real nuissance, especially when it feels like it's zapping you with sharp pains. Let's take a dive into some Ayurveda insights and maybe find a bit of relief for you. First off, from the Ayurveda lens, this could be a Vata imbalance thing. Vata is all about movement and when it goes sideways, it can cause those kinds of pains, y'know. But don’t worry, there’s a way to tackle it.
So first things first, warmth is usually your buddy here. Applying some warm sesame oil, gently yet deliberately, on your back can be soothing. Sesame oil has natural vata-calming properties. Do this in the evening and let it soak in for about 15-20 minutes, then take a warm shower to wash off any excess. And you might want to try Mahanarayan oil too – it's quite revered in Ayurveda for joint and muscle-related gripes.
How about your food? Might be worth your while to keep it warm and nourishing, favoring cooked veggies with some healthy fats like ghee. Avoid cold and dry foods that could aggravate Vata further. Drinking a nice cup of herbal tea with ginger, cumin, and fennel can also be beneficial.
When it comes to a bit of self-care, gentle stretches can sometimes give a noticeable boost. Try slow, mindful movements — possibly lying on your back and gently bringing your knees to your chest. Don't do anything too twisty-turny that might make things worse, just go at your own pace.
If it continues to be this painful or catch you off-guard, a visit to a healthcare professional could be a good idea just to check everything's in place bone-wise. But, with the warmth, the dietary adjustments, and some rest, you might start to feel things ease up. Take it easy and give yourself the grace to heal – our bodies are remarkable when given the right conditions.
