Mixing banana with curd, huh? Not as uncommon as you might think, but Ayurveda has pretty strong opinions on such combos. Here’s the deal: in Ayurveda, we believe in the concept of compatible and incompatible food combinations, known as “Viruddha Ahara”. Bananas and curds are considered a big no-no together, and here’s why.
Banana, being a maadhur (sweet) fruit, is heavy and increases Kapha and Pitta doshas. Curd, on the other hand, is already heavy, heating, and also increases Kapha, plus it can aggravate Pitta as well. When you mix them, they don’t blend well in terms of digestion, leading to poor agni (digestive fire), and possibly creating a heavy toxic substance called “Ama”. So yeah, it can definitely throw your doshas out of balance and lead to the very symptoms you’re experiencing—bloating and sluggish digestion.
Your digestion problems? Yeah, it sounds like what you’re experiencing could be exacerbated by this combo. When our digestion or “agni” is strong, it handles heavier foods better. But when it’s weak or imbalanced (which might be the case with you), incompatible foods can easily tip the scales the wrong way.
About timing and situation: Mixing banana with curd is generally avoided especially if one is experiencing digestive imbalances, like gas or bloating. Better to keep them separate or enjoy them at different times, say banana in the morning and curd in the afternoon or evening.
Now, if you’re really into combining, a possible workaround could be adding warming spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the banana-curd mixture to partially counteract the heaviness; though it’s still not recommended as a regular practice. Instead, enjoy curd perhaps with warm spices or cooked meals rather than raw fruits.
Since you’re eager to balance your doshas and heal your digestion, consider herbal teas like ginger or cumin after meals to support digestion. And, warm foods tend to be easier on the stomach than cold combos like banana and curd.
If digestion continues to be an issue, you might want to explore your diet further with an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor a plan according to your prakriti (constitution) and current imbalances. Keep it simple, prioritize balance—your tummy will thank you!
