In Ayurveda, skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation) is often viewed as a result of imbalances in the doshas—most commonly aggravated Pitta (which governs heat and metabolism) combined with disturbed Vata—and the accumulation of toxins (Ama) due to impaired digestive fire (Agni).

Consume cooling, light, and antioxidant-rich foods. Include fresh fruits (such as pomegranate, apples, and berries), vegetables (like cucumber and leafy greens), whole grains, and herbal teas (mint or coriander water). Avoid excessively spicy, oily, or sour foods Regular yoga, pranayama, and meditation help reduce stress, which in turn supports overall dosha balance. Avoid excessive sun exposure and always use protective measures (clothing, natural herbal sunscreens, hats). Kumkumadi Tailam: This classical oil formulation is widely used in Ayurveda for skin lightening and rejuvenation. help reduce dark spots, even out skin tone, and enhance overall radiance. Sandalwood and Turmeric: When prepared as a paste (used sparingly), these can help brighten and even out skin tone. – Aloe Vera gel can be applied – Licorice powder mix with milk/water can be applied over face. Consistent Sun Protection: Since sunlight is a major trigger for hyperpigmentation, protect your skin daily by applying a broad-spectrum, preferably herbal or tinted sunscreen (with natural physical blockers like zinc oxide) and wearing protective clothing. Use mild, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers to avoid irritation. A regular, gentle routine helps maintain the improvements achieved. Regular check-ups allow us to adjust your regimen as needed, ensuring that your treatment continues to address your unique prakriti (constitution) and current doshic imbalances.

Home remedies 1.Milk Lactic acid is known to lighten patches and dark spots effectively. Soak a cotton pad in milk or yogurt and apply it over your face.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Simply apply apple cider vinegar mixed with water on your dark patches. Leave it for some time and wash it off. Acetic acid present in apple cider vinegar helps lighten skin pigmentation.

3. Red Onion Take off the skin of the red onion and dry it naturally. Grind it into a powder and use it in combination with honey, or milk to apply it over your dark spots.

4. Tomato Juice Rich in a substance called lycopene, tomato juice is proven to reverse the damage on skin caused by the sun. It is helpful to both apply it on your skin and make it a part of your diet.

For Oily skin: Take powdered orange peel with one tablespoon of liquorice powder and 5-6 drops of lemon juice. Mix it and use this paste for skin brightening for oily skin while also getting rid of excess oil.

For Dry skin: Mix honey and liquorice powder into a paste and use it as a hydrating face pack for dry skin that also helps brighten it.

For Normal skin: For normal skin, mix aloe vera gel and liquorice powder to make a soothing face pack that nourishes the skin and helps with skin brightening.

Avoid having foods that are excessively sour, salty, and spicy, instead consume bitter, astringent and sweet taste food. Avoid consuming extremely hot or cold food. Eat your food at a warm temperature. Never eat stale food, eat freshly cooked meals as much as possible.

Hello Nargis, Exactly how did the symptoms start? Ayurvedic management of hyperpigmentation (Vyanga) focuses on balancing the doshas, detoxifying the body, and nourishing the skin. Here’s a detailed approach:

1. Internal Ayurvedic medicine Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) – A potent blood purifier that reduces pigmentation. Take 500 mg twice daily with warm water. Aloe Vera Juice – Helps in cooling the body and reducing skin inflammation. Drink 30 ml on an empty stomach. Neem Cap – 1 capsule twice a day. Syrup Khadirarishta – Take 20 ml with equal water twice a day after meals. 2. External Ayurvedic Applications Kumkumadi Tailam – A traditional Ayurvedic oil that brightens skin and reduces pigmentation. Apply a few drops at night, massaging gently. Sandalwood and Turmeric Paste – Mix sandalwood powder with turmeric and rose water. Apply it on pigmented areas for 20 minutes and rinse.

Licorice and Manjistha Face Pack – Helps in reducing dark spots. Mix both with rose water and apply twice a week. 3. Panchakarma Therapy (For Chronic Hyperpigmentation) Virechana (Purgation Therapy) – Helps in detoxifying the liver and blood. Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) – Effective for severe pigmentation by removing toxins from the blood. Abhyanga (Oil Massage) – With herbal oils like Nalpamaradi or Kumkumadi to improve skin tone. Udvartana (Herbal Scrub Massage) – Reduces skin discoloration and enhances skin texture. 4. Lifestyle and Dietary Changes Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure: Use natural sun protection like coconut oil or aloe vera gel before going out. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and fresh juices to flush out toxins. Follow a Pitta-Pacifying Diet: Avoid spicy, oily, and fermented foods. Include cooling foods like cucumber, melons, and leafy greens. Practice Yoga and Meditation: Reduce stress with yoga postures like Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Pranayama (Breathing Exercises). Consistent use of these remedies and practices for 2-3 months can result in visible improvement.

Alright, dealing with hyperpigmentation can be a bit tricky but let’s dive in. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it often involves an imbalance in the doshas, particularly Pitta, which when aggravated, can affect your skin.

When it comes to diet, focus on foods that pacify Pitta, as it’s often linked with skin issues. So, try incorporating cooling foods — cucumber, watermelon, cilantro, coconut water… that sort of thing. Reduce hot, spicy, oily, and acidic foods. They tend to aggravate Pitta. Alcohol and caffeine are best limited too, since they can heat things up.

Turmeric can be your friend here, both in diet and topical applications. Mix a pinch in warm water each morning, and apply a paste of turmeric with yogurt or honey on the affected areas. Amla (Indian Gooseberry) is also great, internally for boosting immunity and externally as a gentle paste. Drinking amla juice or taking it as a supplement may help too.

For topical applications, besides turmeric, using sandalwood paste can be soothing and effective. Mix with a bit of rose water or milk for a smooth paste. Aloe vera gel is another option. It’s cooling and can be applied directly to the skin. These are natural, but remember everyone’s skin is different, so do a patch test first!

Ensuring proper digestion is crucial — keep that digestive fire, or Agni, balanced. Regular meals, avoiding heavy, greasy foods, and not eating late at night all help. Triphala, taken at bedtime, can aid digestion and detoxification.

Reoccurrance prevention involves managing stress and sun exposure. Try incorporating pranayama and meditation into your routine to keep stress in check. And always use a natural sunscreen or cover up when in direct sunlight.

For supplements, aside from amla, Neem is sometimes used for its purifying properties. But it’s wise to consult with a practitioner for personalized advice before starting new supplements.

It’s a holistic approach really — balancing diet, stress management, digestion, and skincare. Consistency is key, and patience too!
