how to use shankh - #25380

Samuel

I am really struggling to figure out how to use shankh, and it's been on my mind for a while now. A couple of months ago, a friend introduced me to shankh during a yoga session, and it just seemed so intriguing! I’ve heard it can help with digestion and even respiratory issues, but honestly, I feel kinda lost about the whole thing. I've tried searching online but get mixed info. Last week, I decided to pick some up, but now I'm confused about how to actually incorporate it into my daily routine. Like, should I be taking it as a powder or in some kind of tea? And does it work better mixed with other herbs or on its own? I even tried to ask the store owner, but he just gave me a vague answer about how to use shankh in rituals or something, which wasn't quite what I was after. Also, I noticed some digestive issues but nothing too severe, just bloating, and I'm not sure if shankh is the answer or if I should be looking into other treatments too. Do any of you have tips on how to use shankh effectively? Would appreciate any advice, thanks!

Using shankh (conch shell) in Ayurveda is quite interesting, especially since it’s not just used for spiritual practices but also for its therapeutic properties. The cleansing and rejuvenating uses of shankh were mentioned centuries ago in texts like Charaka Samhita which are facinating! It’s primarily used in the form of “shankh bhasma”, an ash processed from the conch shell, known for its alkaline nature beneficial for balancing stomach acid.

You might be surprised but, indeed, it can be helpful for digestion. To incorporate it into your daily routine, you typically take shankh bhasma with water before meals. This timing helps to aid digestion by neutralizing excess stomach acids which might be causing your bloating. It’s best to use it in small amounts (like a pinch or prescribed dose by an Ayurvedic practitioner) as this is potent stuff.

Regarding mixing with other herbs, it can be combined with amalaki (Indian gooseberry) for even better effect on digestion and respiratory benefits since amalaki is rich in vitamin C and supports overall digestion. But if you’re just starting, trying it solo might be easier to gauge how your body reacts.

You were asking about shankh as a tea or powder, well, it’s really not suited for brewing like herbal teas. It’s used more like a supplement in bhasma form. Also, since you mentioned the sensation of bloating, might also want to look into dietary habits. Chewing food thoroughly and eating without distractions aids good digestion; increasing fiber intake can be helpful too.

Keep in mind though, it’s always a good idea to consult an Ayurvedic physician when dealing with supplements like shankh bhasma to ensure compatibility with your individual dosha balance and specific health conditions. Safety first! If symptoms persist or worsen, seeing a healthcare professional is really important to rule out any other issues that might not be addressed by shankh alone.
