Normal delivery, it’s quite the journey! So, let’s dive into it. During a normal delivery, the body undergoes incredible transformation to bring the baby into the world naturally, without surgery. This process has three main stages of labor: the latent, active and transitional stage. Each one has its own distinct rhythms and signs.
The first stage is divided into two parts – latent and active labor. Latent labor is like warming up, the cervix starts to soften and thin out. It can last for hours or even a couple of days! Then, active labor kicks in, and it gets more intense. The cervix dilates from 4 to 7 cm, contractions get stronger, and this usually lasts about 3 to 5 hours.
Next is the transition phase, the part where many women say, “I can’t do this anymore!” because it’s very intense, but hang tight - it’s short, about 30 min to 2 hours. The cervix dilates fully to 10cm, allowing the baby to be pushed out in the second stage, called the pushing stage. This can last from a few minutes to a few hours. Baby’s almost here! And then, finally, the placenta is delivered in the third stage.
Factors that influence having a normal delivery include overall health, baby’s position, pelvic shape, and numerous others. If complications arise, like prolonged labor, fetal distress, or breech presentation, a C-section might become necessary.
Now, let’s talk about making normal delivery a bit easier. Breathing techniques (deep, slow breaths) and exercise can help manage labor pain. Yoga, walking, and pelvic exercises strengthen muscles needed for labor. Ayurvedic practices can be beneficial too. Shatavari and bala, herbs praised in Ayurveda, promote maternal health. Try Abhyanga, a self-massage practice, to relax and ease stress. Perineal massage too, starting from 34 weeks, can prepare the body for delivery.
Personal experiences vary, but many have found relief in water births or using birthing balls to sway through contractions. Each birth is unique, so give yourself grace and trust your body. Consult your healthcare provider for any unique measures tailored to your needs.
