What is the menstrual cycle, and how does Ayurveda explain its phases and irregularities? - #16601

Anonymously

For as long as I can remember, my menstrual cycle has been irregular. Some months, it’s almost on time, but other months, I experience spotting or it’s delayed by over a week. I’ve been trying to get pregnant, but my doctor mentioned that my irregular periods might be affecting my fertility. After some tests, they told me that my hormone levels are a bit off, but they didn’t really offer a long-term solution. I started researching the menstrual cycle and how it works, and I came across the idea that Ayurveda sees the cycle as a reflection of overall health and balance in the body. I want to know how Ayurveda views the menstrual cycle and whether there’s a deeper connection to dosha imbalances, diet, or lifestyle that could be causing these irregularities. I also learned that Ayurveda describes the four phases of the menstrual cycle: menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase. Each of these phases is connected to different doshas and has its own set of physical and emotional symptoms. Does Ayurveda have specific dietary guidelines, herbs, or lifestyle practices that can balance the menstrual cycle and regulate hormonal fluctuations? I’ve been hearing a lot about herbs like Shatavari, Ashwagandha, and Cinnamon being used in Ayurveda for menstrual health. Can these herbs really help to normalize menstrual cycles and improve fertility? I also wonder if my Kapha dosha might be the cause of my sluggishness, bloating, and weight gain around my period, and if so, what can I do to rebalance it naturally? I’m really looking for a holistic approach to support my cycle and fertility naturally through Ayurveda. If anyone has successfully balanced their cycle or improved fertility using Ayurvedic remedies, I’d love to hear what worked for you.

Doctors’ responses

In Ayurveda, the menstrual cycle is a reflection of overall health and doshic balance. Irregular periods are often linked to Vata and Kapha imbalances—Vata aggravation can cause delayed, light, or painful periods, while Kapha imbalance may lead to weight gain, sluggish digestion, bloating, and irregular ovulation. Since you're trying to conceive, balancing these doshas is key to regulating hormones and improving fertility. Ayurveda recommends herbs and dietary changes to support each phase of the cycle. Shatavari is excellent for hormonal balance and reproductive health, Ashwagandha helps reduce stress (a common cause of irregular cycles), and Cinnamon improves blood circulation to the uterus. To balance Kapha and boost metabolism, focus on warm, light foods like ginger tea, cooked vegetables, whole grains, and spices while avoiding dairy, heavy sweets, and processed foods. Daily Abhyanga (oil massage) with warm sesame oil and gentle exercise like yoga (especially poses like Baddha Konasana and Supta Baddha Konasana) can improve circulation and support a healthy cycle. For fertility and cycle regularity, Ayurveda also emphasizes mind-body balance. Try regular sleep cycles, stress management (through meditation or deep breathing), and Panchakarma therapies (like Basti, an herbal enema, to balance Vata). If Kapha is dominant, dry brushing, fasting on warm soups once a week, and digestive herbs like Trikatu (Ginger, Black Pepper, Pippali) can help. A consistent Ayurvedic approach can regulate cycles, support ovulation, and enhance fertility naturally.
