pulmonary edema - #19538

Anonymously

A few weeks ago, my father had to be rushed to the hospital because he suddenly couldn't breathe. He was gasping for air, coughing like crazy, and his face looked swollen. It was terrifying. The doctors said it was pulmonary edema, something about fluid in the lungs. They stabilized him, but he’s still feeling weak, and sometimes his breathing gets heavy again, especially when lying down. He has a history of high blood pressure and heart issues, so I guess this was related. The doctors put him on a bunch of medications, including diuretics, but now he’s constantly feeling drained and dehydrated. His legs also feel weak, and he has no appetite at all. They told us to keep his salt intake low and follow a strict diet, but honestly, it feels like we’re just managing the symptoms, not really fixing the issue. I wanted to ask if Ayurveda has a different approach to pulmonary edema. Can Ayurveda actually help strengthen his lungs and heart rather than just keep removing the excess fluid? Are there herbs or treatments that can support the body without making him feel so weak? Also, his digestion seems off ever since the hospital stay. Could that be affecting his recovery? We’re also looking for natural ways to improve his breathing because he still gets these moments where it feels like there’s pressure on his chest. Would things like pranayama or steam inhalation help with pulmonary edema? I just want to find something that will help him feel stronger instead of just relying on meds that make him more exhausted. If anyone has seen improvements with Ayurveda for something like this, please let me know what helped.

It sounds like your father has been through a challenging experience, and it's understandable to seek a more holistic approach to his recovery using Ayurveda. Given his condition of pulmonary edema along with a history of high blood pressure and heart issues, it's important to take a gentle and supportive approach. First, his symptoms suggest an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, which is often associated with excess fluid and congestion. To help alleviate these symptoms, consider incorporating herbs like Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), which can support lung function and reduce cough, and Pippali (Piper longum) to enhance respiratory capacity. Preparing a decoction with these herbs could be beneficial—boil a teaspoon of each in two cups of water until it reduces to one cup. He can sip this once daily, but please ensure there's no interaction with his current medications. For enhancing digestion, consider introducing digestive spices like ginger and cumin into his meals—these will help kindle his agni (digestive fire). Light, easy-to-digest foods like khichdi (a mix of rice and lentils) with minimal spice can be introduced to nourish him without overwhelming his system. Pranayama techniques such as deep abdominal breathing and Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) can significantly improve his lung capacity and should be practiced gently, seeking guidance where necessary to ensure he's comfortable. Steam inhalation is also beneficial; adding eucalyptus or peppermint oil can help open up the airways. Encourage hydration but in a balanced way, as diuretics can lead to dehydration. Herbal teas with a pinch of salt (like a light herbal broth) can be soothing and provide necessary electrolytes, but monitor his salt intake according to medical advice. Ensure he rests in an elevated position during sleep to ease breathing. Lastly, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can craft a individualized treatment plan that takes into account his entire health profile and ensures the recommendations fit his ongoing medical management. This comprehensive approach can support his healing process while addressing both his heart and lung health more holistically.
