Understanding your arthritis and the impact it has had on your life for two decades is key. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition and in some cases, it leads to joint deformities. You’ve been on methotrexate, which is a common medication used to manage symptoms of RA by reducing immune activity. Surgery advice can be daunting, and it’s understandable to have reservations. Fortunately, Ayurveda can offer supportive treatments to help manage your condition alongside conventional medicine.

Looking at your case, the deformities you mention suggest Vata imbalance, where Vata has settled deeply into your joints and tissues. First thing’s first, you’ll want to focus on gentle ways to calm this Vata and nourish your tissues (dhatus). Let’s talk diet. Favor warm, cooked, and moist meals to soothe Vata. Include a variety of grains like quinoa and rice, and plenty of stews and soups. Spices such as turmeric, ginger, and cumin can promote good digestion and minimize inflammation. Regarding dairy, a bit of ghee can be beneficial and adding it to your meals can provide relief — though too much dairy can be heavy.

Stay hydrated, but not excessively cold drinks. Herbal teas, especially one with ginger or licorice, are good. Yoga or gentle exercises that maintain joint flexibility helps, though avoid stressing those joints. Morning oil massages with sesame oil, infused with warming herbs like ashwagandha, can ease stiffness and increase circulation.

For some, a decoction with Dashmool (ten roots used in Ayurveda) and Ashwagandha can be helpful; consult a practitioner to ensure it’s suited for you. Avoid any rigorous cleanses or fasting which could aggravate Vata.

Remember to discuss all of these strategies with a healthcare professional to ensure they complement your ongoing treatments. It’s essential to have a holistic plan that covers all aspects of your health journey.
