Severe coughs and colds in babies can be quite distressing, especially when they seem recurrent. According to Ayurvedic principles, these symptoms may be associated with an imbalance of kapha dosha, which is linked to excess mucus accumulation. This excess can also hinder proper digestion, affecting your baby's weight gain and overall nourishment. First, let's address your baby's nutrition and weight concerns. Though you've mentioned avoiding foods like curd and milk, moderate use could still be beneficial if appropriately prepared. You can replace regular milk with warm, spiced milk, using spices like ginger or turmeric to enhance digestion without increasing mucus. Cooking milk with a pinch of dried ginger might help balance the kapha. Curd, if consumed, should be in the daytime, slightly diluted, and not taken cold. For fruits, focus on those that are less mucous forming like apples and pears — cooked, if necessary, to make them more digestible. Ensure they're not too cold, to prevent increasing kapha. Including small amounts of ripe banana occasionally when mucus isn't present can support weight gain too. Ghee can be ideally added to his diet; it aids in boosting digestion and nourishing tissues. A little ghee on warm wheat-based porridge or in soups can be very beneficial. As for improving health and immunity, herbs like tulsi (basil) and pippali (long pepper) are known to support respiratory health. Tulsi can be infused in slightly warm water, and the infusion can be given in minimal amounts. For pippali, tiny pinches in food can enhance digestion and metabolism, helping in weight gain. Make a routine where his meals are kept warm and fresh. Regular oil massage (abhyanga) with warmed sesame oil, followed by a warm bath, can improve circulation and immunity. Also, ensure his sleeping environment is warm and there's not too much exposure to cold and damp conditions. Please watch for signs of dehydration or difficulty in breathing — these are urgent conditions requiring immediate medical care, wouldn't want to delay with these symptoms. Consulting with a pediatrician or an Ayurvedic practitioner near you would also be beneficial for a thorough and customized approach based on your child's unique constitution. While Ayurveda offers several viable solutions, safety and well-being is always a priority.
