can we take ashwagandha and shilajit together - #24287

James

I am really curious about this combo I keep hearing folks talk about. Lately, I've been feeling really low on energy and kinda anxious all the time. A friend suggested I try ashwagandha for stress relief, and I’ve read that it’s good!! But then I stumbled upon shilajit — seems like everyone raves about it boosting energy. I just got some ashwagandha powder and have been using it for a week now, but I'm not sure if adding shilajit is a good idea. Can we take ashwagandha and shilajit together? One thing I noticed is that sometimes I get these weird stomach aches after taking the ashwagandha, and I’m kinda worried about mixing the two. Also, my friend mentioned something about energy levels maybe not blending well? I really want to try this out tho! 🤔 Would they actually work well together or could there be any risk? Just looking for some insights from you all!

Doctors’ responses

Yes, you can indeed take ashwagandha and shilajit together. They are, in ayurvedic view, complementary and can actually help address different aspects of your symptoms. As they're both considered "rasayanas," which are rejuvenative substances, they work on improving ojas (vital energy) and overall vitality. Ashwagandha is well known for its adaptogenic qualities, helping to manage stress and balance cortisol levels. This makes it great for anxiety and stress relief. It balances Vata, which may be heightened in your case given the feelings of anxiety and low energy. On the other hand, shilajit is known for its energetic properties, supporting stamina, and is an excellent aid for increasing prana (life force). It's great for improving energy levels and is said to even support better nutrient absorption. However, if you're experiencing stomach aches, this might be a sign that your digestive fire, or agni, is not in optimal condition. It’s important that your digestion is strong to process herbs effectively. Make sure to take ashwagandha with warm milk or honey, as it can be heavy and might create discomfort if taken on an empty stomach. When it comes to shilajit, start with a small dose — ideally a pea-sized amount if you're using the resin form. Take it with warm water or milk. Monitor how your digestive system reacts. It’s always a good practice to consult a practitioner who can analyze your specific constitution and current imbalances. Also, avoid taking them late in the evening as they may increase alertness which can interfere with sleep. If the stomach discomfort persists, or you're noticing more digestive issues, it might be best to pause and consult with a qualified Ayurveda practitioner or healthcare provider, as they might suggest an evaluation of your diet and lifestyle to support agni optimization. It’s encouraging that you wish to explore the treasures of Ayurveda, but listen to your body’s response carefully and make adjustments as needed. Remember, balance is key in ayurveda—aligning lifestyle and dietary habits with your dosha and current needs offers the best results.
