when to start belly binding after birth - #25112

Olivia

I am really confused about when to start belly binding after birth. I had my little one about a month ago, and I’ve been hearing mixed things from friends and family. Some say I should have started belly binding right away, like within a few days after giving birth, while others mention waiting until my body feels ready. I felt so swollen and uncomfortable right after the delivery, and I honestly couldn’t even think about anything other than caring for my newborn. Now, I’m starting to feel like it might be the right time for belly binding but not sure if it’s too late already. I know it’s supposed to help support my core and get things back on track, but what if, like, I missed the window? I’ve heard some women start belly binding after a week, some way earlier than that. Is there a specific guideline for when to start belly binding after birth? Is it different for C-sections than for vaginal births? Any help would be sooo appreciated, I just want to feel normal again!

Starting belly binding postpartum can indeed be a bit confusing given all the different advice floating around. In Ayurveda, belly binding or abdominal wrapping after delivery is known as "Udaravandha" and is considered beneficial to support healing and help in restoring the muscular structure of the abdomen. Traditionally, it's advised to begin belly binding a few days after vaginal birth, usually around the 5th to 7th day. However, each individual is unique, and it's crucial to tailor any Ayurvedic practice to your specific postnatal condition and comfort level. If you had a vaginal delivery and you're past the initial recovery phase, starting belly binding now at one month postpartum is absolutely okay. It's not too late and can still offer support. For C-section deliveries, the approach is generally more cautious. It's important to wait until the incision is fully healed and your healthcare provider gives the green light, which can be several weeks post-delivery. Ideally, after about 6 weeks, if everything is healing well, you can consider beginning belly binding, but it'd be wise to seek direct approval from your doctor. The purpose of belly binding is to provide gentle support to your core, so when you do begin, ensure the binding is not too tight, which could hinder circulation and breath. Use a soft, breathable fabric and bind snugly enough to support but never to compress. Aim for a comfortable pressure that you can wear for several hours a day, gradually increasing as you feel more comfortable. Incorporate this practice with other postpartum Ayurvedic recommendations, like a nourishing diet rich in warm, easy-to-digest foods that help balance Vata dosha, prevalent during the postpartum period. Following a routine of gentle self-massage with warm sesame oil can also help promote circulation and grounding. Listening to your body is key. If at any point you feel discomfort, it's important to reassess your approach. The ultimate goal is to support your body in its natural healing process while balancing your new responsibilities as a mother.
