If your left cheek is swollen and painful because of a wisdom tooth, it could indicate an infection or inflammation that might need immediate attention. While the dentist has prescribed metronidazole and you’re already on it, antibiotics can take some time to reduce the infection fully. Meanwhile, Ibuprofen can help manage the pain and reduce inflammation, but be sure to take it with food to protect your stomach lining.

In Ayurveda, we focus on reducing inflammation and supporting healing. You might gargle with warm salt water to help reduce swelling and cleanse the area. Mix a half teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gently swish around your mouth before spitting out. Practice this several times a day. Careful! Just ensure not to swallow the solution.

You might consider incorporating turmeric, renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, into your diet. A simple way to do this is to mix a small amount of turmeric powder (a pinch) in warm water or milk and drink it once daily. This can help overall inflammation reduction.

For immediate relief, clove oil is traditionally used. Apply a small amount on a cotton ball and place it next to the painful tooth. Clove oil has been shown to provide analgesic properties, potentially numbing the pain temporarily. However, use it sparingly, as overuse might cause irritation.

Make dietary adjustments to nourish without straining your mouth. Soups are great, add well-cooked vegetables or lentils to support nutrition while keeping food chewable. Avoid hot or cold foods that might trigger sensitivity or pain in the swollen region. Soft, room-temperature, nourishing foods supporting tissue healing in Ayurveda can minimize stress on the affected area.

Remember, if your condition worsens or doesn’t improve soon, consult your dentist again. Persistent or severe symptoms could signal a need for prompt intervention, aligning modern medicine with Ayurvedic support for the most effective results.

Swelling and throbbing pain near a wisdom tooth, along with inflammation of the cheek, indicate an acute condition that deserves careful attention. Since you’ve already started metronidazole and ibuprofen, which address bacterial infection and pain respectively, continuing these as directed by your dentist is crucial. However, to support recovery through a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, you can incorporate some additional self-care strategies.

First, focus on promoting oral hygiene and easing inflammation. Conduct saltwater rinses by mixing half a teaspoon of salt in a warm cup of water. Swish this gently in your mouth for about 30 seconds and then spit it out; do this two to three times a day. It can help reduce bacterial growth and soothe the area.

You may also apply a warm sesame oil or clove oil compress to the swollen area outside your cheek. Soak a clean cloth in warm sesame oil, or apply a small amount of clove oil, and hold it against the cheek for a few minutes. This can help relieve discomfort due to its natural analgesic properties.

Internally, consider a diet that avoids food with excessive pitta-aggravating qualities like spicy or acidic substances, which can promote inflammation. Instead, you can include soothing, cooling foods like ghee and plant-based pureed soups.

Lastly, to ensure safety and prevent complications, follow-up with your dentist regularly, particularly if symptoms persist or worsen. Though Ayurveda can assist in supporting healing, persistent or severe symptoms require conventional medical oversight.
