Managing Bloating and Digestion While on Ayurvedic Treatment for Fibroids - #51417

Client_b0a71b

Was diagnosed with fibroids and also have bad digestion and constant bloating. Used to only have bowel movements maybe 2-3 times a week. I eat only organic and healthy foods - although I had been emotionally eating chocolates and icecream (all organic but yes I know still not good). I’m 164cm and weigh around 47kg. 39 years old. I now went on an Ayurvedic 4 month program where I was subscribed various medicines, a yoga program and have also changed a lot in my diet.Eating very clean, warm foods, only drinking warm water, no dairy (only 1-3 times a month and then just in coffee), no processed sugar, wheat etc. I don’t eat breakfast - as I’m not hungry - so first meal is usually around 12pm and then dinner around 6-7pm. W new diet lunch is typically oat cheela w bit of avocado and dinner is eg khidri (w brown rice), chana dal or vegetable broth. For the first month my medicines were eg a churna (aam pachak, shiva rasayan, ashok, bhudhatri), guggulu tablets, and dashmool and gokshurvarunadi kwath. After about a week my bowel movements were daily but bloating persist. I’m soon finishing month 2 where I have been prescribed: a new churna after lunch and dinner. Tablets after breakfast and high tea (granthi rog guggulu, amalaki loh, arogya) Then nari sakhi after dinner and lunch. Then haritaki before bed. Bowel movements are still daily (although not emptying) but bloating is constant. From when I wake up until I go to bed. Daily every morning I drink cumin tea. Then followed by few soaked almonds and raisins. Now doctor suggested taking first meal 10-11 and then wait until 6-7pm for dinner. I feel though it is the medicines that are bloating and not so much the food. Although extra bloat is definitely present right after eating and taking pills. Bloat is not gassy or anything my stomach is just so puffy. Am I not taking my medicines correctly? Or do I just accept the bloat for these 4 months I’m on the program?

You have already made many positive changes, and most of what you described warm food, warm water, reducing processed sugar, and following a structured Ayurvedic program with yoga and medicines is well aligned with Ayurvedic principles. It is also a good sign that your bowel movements improved from 2–3 times per week to daily, which indicates that your digestion and gut motility have started responding to treatment. However, persistent or increasing bloating should not be ignored. If the bloating is more than before or causing significant discomfort, you should not simply tolerate it for the full 4-month program. Ayurveda treatment is always individualized, and sometimes the combination of medicines or diet may not perfectly suit a person’s digestion, especially in the early stages. In such situations, it is important to discuss it with your treating doctor so the combination can be adjusted. If the bloating is less than before but still present, then with a few adjustments it often settles gradually as digestion becomes stronger. A few practical considerations 1. Eat according to true hunger The exact timing (10–11 AM vs 12 PM) is less important than your natural hunger signal. When you feel “I am hungry enough to comfortably enjoy my meal,” that is the ideal time to eat. Eating too early without hunger or waiting too long after hunger can both disturb digestion and cause bloating. 2. Avoid repeating the same dry foods daily Foods like oat cheela and chana dal are relatively dry and light in nature, and if eaten frequently they can aggravate Vata, which is strongly associated with bloating and abdominal distension. Try rotating foods instead of repeating the same items every day. You may alternate with options such as: Soft mung dal khichdi Vegetable soups with a little rice Steamed vegetables with warm grains Light millet preparations with adequate oil or ghee 3. Include ghee regularly Adding 1 teaspoon of ghee with meals daily (especially with dal or khichdi) is very helpful for digestion and to balance dryness. If digestion tolerates it, even slightly more than 1 teaspoon can be beneficial. 4. Fibroids often involve Vata imbalance From an Ayurvedic perspective, many fibroid cases involve a Vata predominance affecting the reproductive system. When diet and medicines do not include enough Vata-pacifying elements (warmth, lubrication, grounding foods), symptoms like bloating can persist. Since you are taking Haritaki at night, which helps bowel movement, it may also slightly increase dryness in some people. Because of this, it would be good to discuss with your doctor whether more Vata-pacifying support (dietary or medicinal) is needed alongside your current medicines.

Namaste, Bloating during Ayurvedic treatment can sometimes happen when digestion (Agni) is still adjusting, especially when multiple medicines and dietary changes are introduced together. Since your bowel movements improved from 2–3 times a week to daily, it shows digestion is responding, but the persistent bloating suggests incomplete digestion or mild gut sensitivity. Simple measures that may help: Eat meals slowly and in a relaxed state, and avoid eating when stressed. Try smaller meal portions, as very heavy meals can increase abdominal fullness. After meals, take a short gentle walk for 10–15 minutes to support digestion. Avoid combining too many different foods in one meal, and keep meals simple. Continue warm water, but avoid drinking large quantities immediately after meals. Sometimes bloating can occur if multiple herbal formulations are taken together, especially guggulu-based medicines, which may feel heavy for some people until digestion adapts. Ayurvedic medicines often used to support digestion and reduce bloating include: Hingvastak Churna – traditionally used to support digestion and reduce abdominal bloating. Avipattikar Churna – sometimes used to support digestion and help regulate bowel movements. Since you are already on a structured Ayurvedic program, it is best not to change medicines on your own. The dosage or combinations may need slight adjustment. Consult me for more advice and suggestions on the above medicines.
