I have chronic constipation, redundant colon. I have been drinking triphala for several weeks without results. I have had to add laxatives and that is not really working at this point. To contribute to this I have lost 2 inches in height over the last few years so the gut is more "compact"shall we say. I have also tried jaggery. And I do have dahl daily along with cooked apples and prunes with added ghee. Then a digestive chia pudding evening meal.

••As an Ayurvedic practitioner, I completely understand how frustrating it is when classical remedies like Triphala and dietary shifts feel like they are hitting a brick wall •Why Triphala and Mild Laxatives are Failing Triphala is an excellent Rasayana (rejuvenative) and mild bowel regulator, but it is relatively mild. In a redundant colon with deep-seated Vata dryness, Triphala alone lacks the necessary Snigdha (unctuous/lubricating) force to push past structural loops. Over-the-counter Laxatives often rely on scraping or irritation. Over time, they worsen Khara (roughness) in the colon, making the bowel dependent and even lazier. 2. Stronger Ayurvedic Vatanulomana (Downward Regulation) Since mild herbs aren’t working, we need stronger, lubricating Vata-pacifying formulations that encourage downward movement without habit-forming irritation: ••Gandharva Haritaki: This is Haritaki processed with castor oil (Eranda taila). Castor oil is the premier Ayurvedic drug for severe Vata constipation because it is Sukshma (penetrating) and highly lubricating. Taking 1–2 tablets or 1/2 teaspoon with warm water at bedtime can help break the stubborn stasis. ••Abhayarishta: A fermented liquid preparation (Asava/Arishta) containing Abhaya (Haritaki). The self-generated alcohol acts as a delivery vehicle to penetrate deep into the compressed gut tissues. Taking 15–20 ml with an equal quantity of warm water after meals stimulates Agni (digestive fire) and peristalsis. ••Trivrit Lehyam / Avipathi Choornam: If the above are insufficient, a stronger Virechana (purgative) under direct supervision, like a therapeutic dose of Trivrit formulation, is sometimes required to clear the initial deep-seated buildup. 3. Addressing the “Compact” Gut: External & Internal Lubrication Because your abdominal cavity is structurally compressed, we cannot rely on heavy fiber to push its way through. We must use biomimetic lubrication to allow stool to glide through the redundant loops easily. ••Abhyanga (External Oil Massage): Massaging the abdomen daily with warm Sesame Oil or Mahanarayan Oil in a clockwise direction is crucial. Because your gut is physically compacted, this manual therapy helps relax the abdominal wall musculature and spasms in the elongated colon. ••Dietary Adjustments for a Compact Space Your current diet is beautifully aligned with Ayurvedic principles (ghee, prunes, cooked apples), but we need to tweak it to account for the restricted physical space: ••Watch the Chia Pudding: While chia is high in fiber and mucilaginous, it is incredibly heavy (Guru) and expanding. In a physically compacted gut, chia pudding in the evening might be creating a structural “logjam” in the redundant loops. Consider pausing the chia seeds for a week to see if abdominal pressure lightens. ••Shift to Snaigdha & Lahu (Lubricated yet Light): Focus on highly digestible, warm, soupy foods. Mung dal khichdi made with a generous amount of cow’s ghee, seasoned with cumin, ginger, and a pinch of asafoetida (Hing—a potent Vata remover), provides nutrition without volume stress. ••Warm Water (Ushnodaka): Sip warm water throughout the day. Cold drinks instantly freeze Vata and worsen colon spasms.
