how to use olive oil for hair growth - #36264

Ryan

I am confused about how to use olive oil for hair growth, like really confused! I've been struggling with thinning hair for a while now, and honestly, it’s been pretty frustrating. A friend mentioned olive oil and how it helped her with her own hair issues, and I'm kinda curious... But where to start? Last week, I tried massaging it into my scalp – I might've used a bit too much, oops! 😅 My hair felt so greasy after, like I could fry an egg on it! I read somewhere that it can also help with moisture, but I’m not sure if I should be leaving it in overnight, or like how long it’s meant to sit before I wash it out. And I also wonder if there are other ways of using it? Like mixing it with something else maybe? I mean, my hairdresser said I should try essential oils, but I still haven’t figured out that part. Also, is there a particular type of olive oil I should be using? Extra virgin, pure, colonnade or what? I guess I just need guidance on how to use olive oil for hair growth properly, cause I really wanna see some change! Thanks for any tips.

When using olive oil to encourage hair growth, start with the right kind—preferably, extra virgin olive oil, because it’s less processed and retains more natural nutrients. Olive oil’s nourishing properties can be great for promoting healthy scalp and hair when used appropriately. Begin by applying a small amount, about a tablespoon, to your palms. Rub your hands together, and gently massage the oil into your scalp. This can improve circulation and strengthen hair, while aiding it’s natural growth cycle.

Leave the oil in your hair for around 30 minutes to an hour; leaving it overnight isn’t necessary unless you feel that your hair is exceptionally dry. Be cautious though; using too much can weigh your hair down, as you’ve noticed. Afterwards, rinse it out thoroughly with a mild herbal shampoo to ensure no residue is left.

If you’re considering mixing olive oil with other ingredients, essential oils like rosemary or lavender can be beneficial. Just a few drops mixed with the olive oil can further enhance hair growth due to their scalp stimulating properties. Make sure to patch test essential oils to avoid any adverse response. Heat the olive oil slightly before applying—not hot—just warm enough to touch comfortably as warmth can increase absorption.

Additionally, olive oil can be used in combination with hair masks. An effective option is mixing it with yogurt and honey for a deeply moisturizing treatment. Blend them into a smooth paste, apply it uniformly to your hair, covering with a shower cap, and let it process for around 45 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Regarding frequency, applying this routine once or twice a week could offer noticeable improvements in scalp health and hair vitality over time. Be patient but consistent; changes in thinning hair don’t occur overnight. If your scalp feels unusually greasy, reduce the quantity or try a dry scalp treatment in between. Be mindful of any allergic reactions, and consider your individual hair needs.

Certainly, let’s break down how to use olive oil for hair growth through the lens of our Siddha-Ayurvedic principles. Firstly, olive oil is excellent for nourishing the scalp, primarily because it’s rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which can help to balance Pitta and improve hair health.

To begin, use extra virgin olive oil, which is the least processed and retains most nutrients. Before applying it, gently warm the olive oil on low heat. Warimg it aids absorption and soothes the scalp. Massage a small amount, about a teaspoon or so, into your scalp using your fingertips in a circular motion. This helps stimulate blood circulation to the hair follicles, an essential aspect of promoting hair growth.

For those with excess Kapha (oily conditions), it might be more suitable to leave the oil on for just 30 mins to an hour before rinsing it out. If your hair is on the drier Vata side, you could leave it in overnight, but ensure you cover your pillow with a towel. Do a patch test first to make sure you’re not sensitive to the oil, though it’s rare any adverse reactions occur.

You can also blend olive oil with a few drops of rosemary or lavender essential oils, both of which are mentioned in Ayurvedic texts for promoting hair vitality. Use up to 5 drops per tablespoon of olive oil. This can enhance microcirculation to the scalp and bolster hair growth.

To avoid that intense greasy feeling post-application, ensure you use just enough to lightly coat the scalp – not saturate it. Also, when washing out, choose a mild natural shampoo. Do this oil treatment once a week to start and observe any changes.

But remember, olive oil, like any natural remedy, may take time to show effects, especially as it’s working to enhance the natural properties of your scalp and hair. If you notice persistent thinning or hair loss, it’s worth consulting a health professional to rule out underlying deficiencies. Adjust your diet as well to include those that balance your doshas and enhance the sapta dhatus, such as fresh fruits, nuts, and warm cooked meals.
